haha. I do like the sound of EZRotate. I have considered it a few times, but I've always figured out how to do it myself at the last moment. It's still something I might pick up in the future. What I've also discovered is even though the two rotation command sets in DB are incompatible, you can actually still use them in conjunction if you use them in the right order.

Here's some of my tree stuff (some of these variables have been calculated earlier).

When the tree is first hit:

That makes it face the direction for falling, but still appear to face the same direction as before. Then, this for falling over:

Obviously that's stripped down. But it's nice and simple. When it's fallen over, it slowly falls through the ground untl out of view.

I still might consider EZRotate in the future though.

Ahh, ok. A promo it is. The debris effect isn't too OTT, as too many primitives would be a big performance hit. It just adds a bit of something extra.

Use a movie editor(Windows movie maker is fine) to load it and then save it in a lower quality.

Looks cool, Fallout

Yeah, lookin good! For the explosions, if you really care at this point in development, are too white and yellow. I think they need more shades of orange. But get the game fun first! I don't wanna see excellent graphics come before gameplay.

Wow, looks stunning!

Granted I haven't looked at too many projects made with DarkBasic, but of the ones I have looked at, this is by-far the most amazing one yet.

Keep up the fantastic work, it's very inspiring

Thanks for the continued feedback. Yep, I use Fraps to record the movies and then Windows Movie Maker to compress them down afterwards and add the music tracks.

@Cavex - Not too sure on the health system, but there will be some sort of health bar in place so you know when ya tank is about to blow.

Progress will stop for a while now as I meet a bunch of uni deadlines for the next couple of weeks, then back onto it.

Hi Fallout,

I'm pretty new to Dark Basic and TGC etc, and I noticed your post yesterday. I have to say that I am quite amazed at the level of detail you have, especially because this is a one man project.

Your game really shows me what DarkBasic is capable of, and I am
now seriously thinking about getting it.

Please keep it up

Cheers Daniel. Thanks for the kind words.

Here's an update people. Weapon damage and collision is now in as well as automatic targetting and target selection. Here's a short staged battle showing this stuff. The balancing on weapon damage and health isn't right yet as I've not played with it much, so the tanks might be going down a bit easy and not dishing out quite enough damage, but the concept is there.

Vid updated with new version a few posts below

Howdy!
Just was wondering wether youll be making more buildings and units for the game.
Im always unhappy when there is a great rts, but then I have finished all the upgrades, have all the buildings and such. It feels like the game is already over when I havent really attacked the opposing team yet. But there is nothing left to do except build units and attack. WarCraft III was a great game, but I felt that it had a very limited amount of units for each team, and buildings, and upgrades.

And finally, do...not...rush...this...game! It looks very promising and I would hate to see it finish as a really badly put together rts that has been rushed.

My deadline is about a week ago really. I should be getting user feedback right now to help support my hypothesis. So I'm having to cut my losses and work on making a rolling demo which means I can simplify and speed up what there is to do, and still make a product that I can test with some users. So, hopefully by tomorrow or early next week I'll have a fully fledge rolling battle scene. At that point I'm stopping development for my dissertation and will have to get the rest of the process out of the way.

After my dissertation is in and my exams are done, I'll return to the project then and see where it can be taken, but it definitely won't be finished anytime before June or July now, although there will still be some eye-candy along the way.

Thanks man. Don't forget though, the best thing about an RTS is everything is seen from a distance, so I can get away with really average models.

Here's a substantially updated battle scene, and this may be it for a while again. I'll probably use this one for user testing.

Looks amazing!

My only criticism is that the chopper just kind of moved up, and didn't really look like it was having any trouble with gravity. And I think the troops should be smart enough to not just stand still while they're being attacked... They should move to get better shots and to just in general look more real. Also, I don't think the chopped should just fly in one spot while attacking. In fact, the whole scene looked a bit too static once all the units were in place... I dunno, I guess after playing space rts's, I kind of expect frantic moving battles.

Still looks amazing though, but I definitely think your units need to be able to move around a bit on their own once they're engaging an enemy.

Great soundtrack, btw.

There is very little AI in place at the moment. There's path finding AI for tanks only, and no "move based on who to target" AI. The incoming tanks have destinations to get to and use the path finding AI to get there and then automatically choose their targets along the way. No other units have any real AI at the moment except for target choice, aiming and firing.

Thanks for the kind comments people.

I think he's going to make it an RTS (Real Time Strategy), but a FPS would be fun to .

Quite alot of action in there - very fun to watch!

I like how the pillboxes are constantly spewing out gunfire and don't seem to get destroyed themselves.

@Uncle Sam

Fraps should record sound by default. Take a look at the setup in fraps and make sure its recording from the right device, and also make sure it's the same device that is outputting sound in your game.

@Seppuku Arts

It's the default codec used by windows movie maker. It should work fine in most version of windows media player. If you've got new graphic drivers recently, they sometimes mess up WMP with their acceleration settings. I've had that problem before. You just need to go to your desktop display properties > settings tab > Advanced > Troubleshoot > Then try reducing the hardware acceleration by a notch at a time and see how the vid looks. Might help, but I might be wrong.
