You are right I think. He has about 24 more hours.

EDIT: found out I can still use the Evaluation version of winzip, sooo....

This is the final version of my game!

EDIT 2: by the way, did I mention that this is a very difficult text adventure? If you die....no saving, 'cause it is relatively short, but rather hard.

EDIT3: final entry added later on. this entry here is not my final entry!

As much as I hate defeat. I am afraid I won't be able to enter (I know what I said!). I have had probelm after problem so now I have got a ton of de-bugging and codind to do with hardly any time! I had such a godd story! But no I will be able to work on the other options I wanted this Text Adventure game to have! Thanks Matt and sorry about this! Good luck to all I wish the very best! And if i had the money (Unfourtunaley my payments don't go in until the 11th) I would offer a runner up prize of the eXtends plugin! Really! Wait a minute let me just check the price see if I could...

@Uncle Sam
I loved your entry! It was nicely done haven't played much of it but will get round to it!

@IBOL
I loved the opening image. I know media doesn't affect game score but that is a winner!

I can't wait to play these entries... I wish the contest's rules didn't forbid me from playing them now (but if someone wanted to change their entry or fix a last-minute bug it would mess up that chance, so unfortunately, I have to wait). I'm hoping we get some more, too We've had a few via e-mail but mostly they've all been posted here. I'm going to have a lot of fun playing these games!

@ Darth: Don't give up! Kill a few features if you need to, hehe. You've been one of the more active participants thus far and I'd hate to see you quit without entering something. Remember, the story makes up most of the score, so if the game is functional, you might still have a shot at winning, or at least winning the runner-up prize (which isn't anything more than bragging rights... next time we do this contest we'll offer better prizes, I promise!)

btw, Shane e-mailed me and told me that he *does* have the latest version of DX, in case anyone was wondering I don't know why he didn't just post that here though lol, no biggie. Anyway, keep the cool entries coming!

Well, it doesn't quite live up to the design I wrote on paper, and it's honestly mostly because of lacking time.

I'll make sure to be unemployed the next time I try something like this...

Also, I hope it's ok to compile using standard DBPro .pck files from compile. Because this is something I've done. No idea how big it is otherwise, I just realized I had made those settings and I'm at work for the night.

I also hope it's ok to send core .dba files that are not rewritten into a .txt or something similar...

Puh... Other than that - here's my entry. Version 0.1, I think I'd say... Hehe.

Thanks Darth. Glad you are enjoying it.

Don't give up yet! At least keep trying until you run out of time, and if you do, you can still post it up in the program announcements board.

I had a couple friends test mine, and one said there were typos, so I will make some changes and then post up yet another version.

I just noticed this:

Quote: "Originality depicts your title's general uniqueness"

in the contest description. The contest is probably already over, but I was just wondering if the title's originality affects the score, or the game's originality itself. I named mine "A text Adventure" because it seemed so fitting! I didn't even realize it might affect my score.

Thanks for all of the entries everyone! I'm downloading them all right now, and for the next few days we'll be judging them all. Good luck to everyone!

@ Uncle Sam: Yes, originality makes up 1/4th of the total score. If you have a well-written story it could make the difference, and the title will probably be overlooked in most cases (unless it's an amazing title) so I wouldn't worry too much

Thanks.

I may have closed my browser before the upload finished completely, so I'm going to play through it one more time (even though the contest is over) to make sure it works ok. As you can tell, I'm nervous.

EDIT: oh no oh no oh no, my newest version is not playable...is it ok if u use the one right before my last entry, cause i just tested my last one, and its not playable...

My second to last entry has a big grammar error with the "use" command, as well as a few other erros, but it works!

After all my hard work...please, I beg you!!!!

Well, technically you posted it prior to the deadline... so I suppose I don't see anything wrong with using that version. It's a good thing you caught me before the judge whose judging that game woke up, hehe (it's 3am here). If we had more entries I'd probably have said "sorry," but we didn't get as big of a turn-out as we'd been expecting (not too shabby though!) so we'll have a bit more free time, hehe. Anyway, I'll send that off to the proper judge right now.

Reaper, which game did she send? Are you sure she sent it to the proper e-mail address? E-mail me and let me know the name of her project and I'll go through each of the judge's files to see who has it (or if someone has it... I'm not sure because the only e-mail entries I recieved were from Ben D., Michael G., and Jaded Gamer (last names withheld for obvious reasons). I hope we have it! Did she send it to Maximus_PT1@yahoo.com?

So far, I know that "The Melody Machine," "A Pirate's Tale," and "Snappy" all work fine, as told by our judges. We're still waiting for two of the judges to let me know if the games they had worked okay. But the two I played worked fine... but I won't say which two I played, nor will I say how they were scored Anyhoo, I'll let everyone know as soon as the other games have been played.

Indeed... So as to avoid flaming for placing low grades

Or the possibility of a bribe. Hehe.

I must say that there seems to be fewer entries than I had hoped for. Too bad. But in any case, I look forward to see a summary of all entries!

That's because yours is in the inbox of the other judge, that and "When all is Said and Done." There's still no word as to whether either works, but if the other judge doesn't write me by tomorrow night I'll be forced to have a different judge do those two games, either me, Mike, or Sharyn. As it stands, three games have been played and scored.

Nope, it's the 11th. I was expecting a flash-flood of entries and severely over-estimated the time we'd need to judge them all hehe. So now you can be sure that we'll take our sweet time judging to make sure everything is tip-top

@ Angel Eyes: Unfortunately, we didn't get that game. Here's the full list of the games we recieved (NOT in any particular order, although many of them have already gone through the first stage of judging):

Ninestar
A Pirate's Tale
Snappy
When all is Said and Done
A Text Adventure
Dark Knights
Melody Machine

Apparently, two people so far have reported that they've sent their games to my e-mail address and that my e-mail wouldn't take them... Which is very odd, because other text adventures came to me via e-mail (including "Snappy" and "Dark Knights"), and I get dozens of files sent to my e-mail address every day for game development purposes and we've never had a problem with it. I've had communication issues with Visionary Designs and a few others, but those have been fixed and I haven't had any missed e-mails since then (about a week or two before the contest) so I'm wondering why all of the sudden these two games have gone missing (unless you're Reaperman's daughter, in which case only one is missing). I'll contact Yahoo! about it the second I post this.

I'm not really sure what to do about these rogue e-mail cases. If there *is* a problem with my e-mail address, how is it that my game dev team never has a problem sending files three times larger to me? The rules of the contest specifically say that no entries will be admitted after the cut-off date, but it wouldn't be fair to the entrants who sent in their entries on time who had issues with my e-mail address. I think this calls for divine intervention... time to get Rich involved hehe.

My two cents:

I think the two entrants whose games didn't go through in email should be allowed to resubmit ASAP. I am sure they put a lot of work into their games. There is always the possibility that some problem beyond anyone's control actually made the email undeliverable at that time, and they should be given the benefit of the doubt.

On a different note:

Turning in my game seemed almost like turning in a term project and I feel like I am waiting to see what grade I got. I feel like I am going crazy with anticipation!

"So it goes."

I've spoken with Rich about it and he helped me figure this out. Because of the small number of entrants we've had (only seven, compared to the 20+ we were expecting), and because it is an apparent technical issue from my e-mail address, those two contestants (and them ONLY) can send their projects in so long as they do it ASAP. Post them TO THIS BOARD using the attachment uploader in the post area, and do it within 24 hours of this message being posted. Don't send them via e-mail because we've already had issues with that, and we're getting a bit "down to the wire" here (as it is, I'll need to judge both of these myself I think). So post them to this board. If you need help posting the games as attachments, ask immediately and I'll help you out with it. Hurry!

I just thought I'd tell you guys this. I share this account with my friend. He's currently at a camp and I don't know when he will get back. I'm going to be leaving tomorrow morning for a trip and I won't be back until the 14th of this month (after the winners are announced ). So I won't be able to reply to any of your questions or if our game won the competition. I don't know when my friend will be back, but he may be able to respond before I get home. So, ya, I just thought I'd tell you that.

Maybe it will be... the judges seemed to have enjoyed it this year, I know I loved it, and maybe we'll do another one in a few months It's all up to the judges really. The next time we hold a text adventure contest we'll have the rules better sorted, we'll give the contestants more time to enter their games, and we'll try to get runner-up prizes organized before the contest is even announced

Everyone please note that this thread WILL NOT contain the list of winners... we'll be creating a second thread for that purpose, here in Game Design. I'm not sure if I should tell everyone's scores, or if I should keep the scores secret and give them only via e-mail request... you guys decide and vote before noon EST tomorrow when I announce the winner and runner-ups Personally, I think it would be better if we displayed the scores privately... like, if you wrote a game, you e-mail me and I'll tell you your full score. In any contest, someone is going to come in last, and it isn't fair to that person that his or her score be displayed to everyone in the world, hehe.

Hmm, I suppose that an email would be the better way to share the scores. However, if no one has any objections to showing the scores, then go for it. All the scores really do is show where we need to improve and what we're doing right.
