Hehe

Ok, time for me to get back to work, I tend to get sucked in by these forums, and they can be a time burgler....I want to get a lot done this week.

But please, keep the suggestions coming, and remember not just characters. I'll be watching this thread. And I'll post my progress, hopefully Jon will use this thread to post his progress too, and we can have a little friendly "competition" to push each other.

By the way Jon, I call dibs on a bow and arrow as a weapon...

ok then, you got to make a detailed water script, its hard but it is possible, and you got to make alot of terrain so you dont just have flat floor, and you have to make some trees that are worth using, all the trees i seen so far have like the same 3 textures.

There is something that i really want to see though, A Smart sneeking system, so far i never seen one, you got to make it happen so that you can make your games very like oblivion, that would be so awsome to see alot of FPS medevil games being made, i just love to hear peoples sucsess storys with this program

... son of a!

dibs on a crossbow and slingshot, since youve got the best ones (staff and bow)

hah!

when the time comes i'll make my own thread, if using this, my works would pretty much be scattered amongst random pages, rather than a nice clean first post

i shall do as bond1 suggested and post some progress here....for the mean time, until enough is pulled together for my own thread

continued on with the ogre/troll , i wanted backward knees like the goblin, so i copied those other quickly and made a few adjustments to make them fatter:

i'll probably add some more polies in places, taking into account, that the size of this creature is a tad larger than a human, it will be easier to pick out noticable sharp edges, so it needs a bit of smoothing

edit:

just incase anyone is wondering, i'll optimize it for better deformation later on

Looks great Jon, I've SO been wanting to do a backwards knees character, they just look so cool when they move. Mind if I do a creature like Tumnus from Narnia? He's centaur-ish, and wouldn't require a whole new animation set.

He's a Faun

Anyone considering the Giant Spider & Scorpion? Can they even be achieved as characters in FPSC? I've created a spider a while back, but I didn't get it to work as a character, only as an entity, but that's not the best solution.

haha yeah i know, i love backward knees characters aswell, it also randomly gives them a better standing stance

yeah go ahead with that Faun, i was going to create a goat like character like that who runs around with a large spear, but it seemed a bit weird in my mind

@ Benjamin A

yep, one of the obvious creatures i planned to make was a spider, but seemed a bit common, so i wouldnt mind spicing it up a bit and turn it into a sort of face grabbing thing out of alien

But the other characters are common also, I'd prefer a more regular spider

very well, i suppose it will be pretty simple aswell, im going to try for a style like the 'shelob' creature in LOTR, even with alpha channeled hair on the legs

scrap that face grabber idea, would be hell to get the attack right

Linik, I have removed a few of your posts. This is not your thread. People aren't commenting on your work because they are ignoring you; they are ignoring you because you are being rude. I suggest you create your own thread, if you want a discussion on your modeling skills and any packs you wish to make.

Cool! Very cool, I like that idea That's going to be an awesome and fearsome opponent in FPSC. Could be used for fantasy, medieval, modern and scifi also.

I like that idea too! Maybe you could make a bigger "boss" version and also smaller baby spiders as cannon fodder to distract the player (and waste ammo) while dealing with the bigger one.

Finally having some fun adding detail with the Nvidia Photoshop filter, dang that is one heck of a cool tool! The detail on the wrist cuffs, buckle, and shoulder pads would be next to impossible to model. But it was a piece of cake in photoshop!

This is the low-poly model + amb. occlusion +normal map:

I appreciate the enthusiasm Linik, but this isn't the right place to cut your teeth when it comes to modelling. Just practice, practice, practice. Start with easy stuff.

yep, its a very good tool, an excellent space filler aswell

i took a shot at the spider model but i may need to try it again, get some better reference.

i will try to get one of the models textured and normal mapped soon, for show, seems to all be wireframes right now

Prepare to have your faces rocked. Final dwarf and texture, this is probably my fastest texture job, and also my best. He's going on the shelf for now as I'm 99% happy with it, time to move on to something else.

Got some work done the last few days. This one is a faun/satyr. Low poly is done and UV mapped, and I've spent the morning working on the high poly, still a WIP.

Low poly:

Thanks! I really hunkered down and made myself a nice generic male body a while ago. In fact I've used the same one for the troll, dwarf, and faun. It was just a matter of scaling stuff around for variation and cutting in detail where needed (like shoulder pads, clothes, etc.) I don't think I'll ever start purely from scratch again, at least not for humanoid characters.

yep, ive been meaning to do that again sometime, my last one was a long a long time ago, so i start from scratch now but go on to add the features which distuinguish the character, by either accident or just to get it done.

im kind of stuck in limbo right now, i only really get to work heavily on my laptop, which has integrated graphics, really the only thing stopping me from going all out crazy on shader tests and perhaps even modding to test my models in a different engine.

thus im leaving most work over chistmas, hopefully looking to get a laptop with an nVidia GeForce Go 7900 GS with some money put togetehr ans selling this piece of crap saying that though it has served me well.

which reminds me, a while back in Geek culture forums, you posted your workspace, what model is that laptop you use? looks like a HP am i right?

Yeah, it's an HP, one of those big desktop replacement models with a full size keyboard on it. It's a Pavilion, dv8000 series, AMD Turion 64, and ATI Radeon XPress M200 dedicated graphics. I put 2 gigs of memory in it. I've been extremely happy with it stability and speedwise too. No trouble at all handling 2048x2048 Photoshop files with a ton of layers.

A 7900GS based laptop should smoke! Especially if you get a fancy Core 2 Duo model.

yep, 2.0 Ghz 4MB cache, friggin great

problem is that its a Dell, nothing really wrong with it, just that ive had one for a year and well, kinda boring, almost 'novice looking'

i really like the look of the HP pavilions, shame i cant find any in my price range compared to the dell's

I think I know what you mean, although though XPS laptops look pretty sweet. But my Dad bought a Dell a couple years ago, and it looks like a kids toy, on the other hand he's been running it non-stop for 2 years with no problem.

On a totally unrelated note, it looks like Mudbox is on the verge of release. On the website there is now pricing info! I'm now feeling a small pang of regret at already buying Silo...maybe I should have waited a little longer. Oh well, Silo was dirt cheap, and I'm sure it's perfectly adequate for my needs.

But check out this guys's Hulk model from the Mudbox website, it shows me just how basic my high poly models are compared to a seasoned pro:
http://www.kolbyjukes.com/subpages/hulk.html

At the bottom check out the low poly game model, it's basically a human shaped blob! Even my models have more detail! All the detail, even the clothes, are generated from the normal map. I might have to totally rethink how I make characters from now on. I'm definitely going to revisit my troll model.

Anyway, enough rambling on for now...

wow! this is the first time I am actually seeing a normal map cpnvert something so simple into something so detailed!!!

Seriously, if one can do so much using normal maps, there is very little need to model something with any more detail than a 'blob'

I really need to start learning this kind of stuff!

i just found a Precision M65 dirt cheap which is pretty damn amazing, designed even for CAD, modeling and video editing. a nice not too "dell-like-flimsy-plastic" design aswell.

yeah mudbox looks fantastic, i too am having slight regrets

Yes, that's true to an extent, although that detail has to come from somewhere - either a high poly model or from overlaying detail with the Nvidia filter.

Now granted, most of the Hulk's clothes are skin tight, but that is an almost perfect example of how a normal map is almost like magic.

Long time no update...

The faun is pretty much done. These aren't renders, no fancy render techniques were used for these pics. Thiss is the actual in-game model shown under a directx 9 shader in the max viewport with a 2 light setup.

Front view: low poly + normal map + spec

Side and back:

Closeup:

I'm not totally happy it, I will probably do a few more tweaks, but it goes on the shelf for now. I've already started a wizard and the modelling is almost done.

Thanks, all the detail on the hands comes from the normal map. You should see the diffuse, it's basically skin and fingernails.

Polycount = 4500 triangles
