SpaceBattle Shootout

DEMO 4 RELEASED

Hi all!

Demo 4 is finally here! Or you could call it Demo 4 beta... Because there are still a bad thing about it... The menu looks awfull right now But it will of course get fixed... Here's the download link!:
Demo 4

Again, a readme file has been included where you can read about changes and new features... And a new achievement and weapon upgrade text document has also been included, where you can read about the current achievements and weapon upgrades in the game, and how to get them.

Use the shield by pressing the "s" key... Note that you'll have to unlock it first! Find out how to do that by looking in the Achievement and weapon upgrades document...

I need to balance the shield more thought... Will be done in next release.

Enjoy!

Plans for final version(Next release!)

Here you got some plans for next release:

*New player ship model
*mines
*Get the menu done
*A training level
*Fully done user guide for the game
*Another new enemy
*As much bug fixing and code optimitation as I can
*More achievements and weapon upgrades
*Make the background switch between diffrent images
*Balance shield to fit with gameplay

[EDIT]

Website

SpaceBattle Shootout got it's own website! Here's the link:

[EDIT]:

Demo 3 is released!

Download Link:
http://www.nerd.galekus.com/SpaceBattle_Shootout_Demo_3.rar

More information can be found in the Demo 3 release post in this thread. For information about changes and new features, please read the Readme file that is included in the download.

[EDIT]:

Seeking persons to test the new demo(4):

I wanna ask if there was anyone here that would be able to help testing it? This way I can collect results of the game running on other computers... To see how it runs. You will be included in the credits
if you help beta testing.
Now I don't want this thread to be filled() with "Let me beta test!" etc... So anyone who are interested please email me at:

kattenolleREMOVETHIS@hotmail.com

Any request of getting in the "testing team" happening in this thread will be ignored, so no reason to post it here at all.

PLEASE NOTE: There will may go some while before Demo 4 is released. I just start to seek persons now. This way it's easier for me plan beta testing and so on...

Thanks

[EDIT]:

Demo 2 released!

Grab it here:
http://www.nerd.galekus.com/SpaceBattle%20Shootout%20Demo%202.rar
You need to copy and paste in your adressbar.

If you want to see changes and new features either read the included readme file, or find one of the last posts in this thread.

Hello all!

I've worked on a game for some while now. It's titled "SpaceBattle Shootout".

I hope i'm gonna catch the arcade style feeling for this game. It's 3D and maybe reminds a little like the old asteroids game. Except that there aren't any asteroids in this game, but enemy ships instead
I got this game in the New Year Resolution, for that I hope I will finish it And I better do, because this game finally starts to go somewhere. And I also got a demo for you all to download, but before the download, here you got some screenshots:

This is screenshots from the early demo(And I wanna thank Scraggle really much for making those awsome backgrounds for the game). It's very simple, the only thing you need to do is to shoot down the enemys(there are 10 in the demo). It may not be that easy, but as I said, a little arcade feeling won't hurt I completed the demo round with 70 left in energy, can you guys do it better?

The AI may need a little more balancing, but it works just fine right now It's not smooth, but it works.

Here you got some of the future plans for the game:

Gico came with a great idea, with some kind of surviving mode. Before you start the game, you select how many enemies you want to fight against, then go fight them.

Un-lockable levels. If you complete something, you will unlock small extra levels, where you need to survive asteroids coming from the right side of the screen and you're in the left side of the screen need to shoot them down.

A better menu of course And some better 2D graphics.

Be able to complete levels...

Some kind of upgrade shop.

Well, those are just some of the future ideas for the game. When you've killed all the enemies, no more happens. Controls and credits are included in a readme file in the folder.

I just wanted to get input from users early, so I can improve it the best I can So please download the demo I have attached to this post, and tell me what you think about it. Both good and bad.

[EDIT]:

To do list before Demo 3 release

Okay guys. A little update here to keep this thread updated with the latest progress, and so you can see how close Demo 3 is to a release.

Progress before Demo 3 release:

= Not done yet.
= Being worked on.
= Done.

Menu Graphics:
New menu graphics implementet in game:
Better highscore system:
You will restart in the menu after dying, instead of the program just ending!:
Testing Testing Testing!!!!:
Demo 3 release!:

This list will be updated as progress goes So keep an eye on it

-The Nerd

[EDIT]:

Well, I just downloaded the demo to see if it worked, and it did. Now I survived the demo with 90 energy left...

[EDIT]:

Images of updates(These pictures also exist through posts in
this thread) NOTE: This part is now un-supported. I will NOT put any new screenshots in this post. For the newer screenshots, visit the website, or look at the newer posts in this thread.:

Was that sarcasme? It is an early demo you know If I misunderstood, then sorry, my bad

Megaton Cat just gave me some good ideas for effects. Like particles behind the player ship, and of course explosions! I'm gonna add those things!

Also new ideas for the next demo would be:

*Maybe timed based levels? This way you would not get the same highscore all the time, and it would give you some pressure to try and get so many enemies you can, to get a better highscore I would like users opinion on this feature.

*Effects!

*Maybe respawming enemies.

Thanks for the kind words Gico!

If I can, I will work some more on the game tommorow, and try to fix a little here and there. Also I would like to add some new features.

I'm gonna release a new demo version when I got the effects run good(They actually already do, I just still need some explosions for the enemy ships). And when I got a highscore system in the game.

Until then it would be nice if you guys to test out the game and see if you find any bugs(thought hopefully there aren't anyone right now when the game is so small )

Also if anyone got ideas for features that could go into the game, that would be great to hear!

I've also posted this game on the Galekus forum. I've done this to help out Frozen Flame with his new forum, and for that he will host the game for me, his so kind

The cubes are just placeholders until I got some new models for the enemy ships.

Hi guys!

Here's a little "update for the day".

The first thing I did today was to add a game setting.ini file. With
this little fella, you can change the screen resolution, and change
to another control device! That's right, after that I implemented
controls with joystick! It's not fully done yet, it got it's issues
The thing is that it dosn't detect how much you pull left/right. This
means that it just detects if it's pulled right or left, and that can
get pretty hard to control. I will try and fix this tommorow. Then
i've also implemted the highscore system.

Also Frozen Flame have been so kind to give me an account that works
just the same way as a website account! This means that I can make
a small website for the game! I don't know when I will start on this.

I don't really know when next demo version of the game comes out, but
if the progress keeps going as fast as now, it can't be too long!

The next thing i'm gonna implement in the game will be the
respawning system for the enemies. This will make it alot more fun I
think!

As the last thing I wanna tell the newest plans for the gameplay.
Right now i'm gonna make it so that each level will be time based.
Now to make it a little harder than just to survive, you need to
reach a decided number of points in every level before you can go on
to the next level. This number will raise each level, and so
does the enemies. You get the needed points by shooting enemies. If you
crash into the enemis, you lose some of those points So it's gonna
be quite hard I think.

Well, that was it! Keep the comments coming

Thanks for the comment Lukas

Well, I got a new demo version ready for you all! The only problem is..... That I got some problems with the ftp So I will edit this message as soon as I got it uploaded. The new demo contains:

*Joystick support
*Game setting.ini file, with this file you can change screen resolution and if you wanna use joystick or not.
*The start of the respawning system! Right now the demo is designed as a surviving mode. There will start off with being 1 enemie, you shoot it, and now there are 2 and then it just keep going like that. The highscore system is also implemented in this demo.

That's about it! Will edit as soon as it's ready to download.

[EDIT]:

Nope! Still no download link I just came to tell that i've added a small "feature" for all upcoming demo versions. I know that the intro movie can be a pain... So if you go to the game settings.ini file, and change "intro = yes" to "intro = no" the intro movie will be gone! There are more information about this in the file itself..

New Demo Available

Hi all!

Finally I got the new demo uploaded!
You can grab it here:
http://www.nerd.galekus.com/SpaceBattle%20Shootout%20Demo%202.rar

Comments would be nice

If you wanna know changes and new features, please read above post.

[EDIT]:

Somehow the highlight of the link dosn't work. So you need to copy and paste it in the adressbar
Also I will notice you all of a little bug. Somehow I forgot to change the for-next loops... So they only check for enemies up to the number of 10... This means that when there is more enemies than that, they won't move... I should not surprise me if I forgot this for the shooting for-next loop
But the game works non the less.

[EDIT]:

Demo works now!

Just downloaded the second demo, it plays very nicely

A suggestion: The controls seem very "precise" for an asteroids style game, a thrust system (ie doesn't stop instantly when you let go of up but slows down instead) would feel more like zero gravity, like in the original Asteroids.

If you don't intend it to play like astroids, perhaps get the camera to always stay with the ship centred and scroll/tile the background around it for movement?

Anyway its really quite cool to play, I like the effect around the ship and the glow of the bullets Good work man!

Thanks for the comment Kangaroo2 BETA2! And for taking the time to download and play it I'm glad you liked it.

I actually have a acceleration/de-acceleration system in the game... And it's actually there... It's just quite hard to notice because I use such a small number as the speed limit. I will try to increase it a little, and use smaller decimal numbers when accelerating and de-accelerating.

Nah... I would rather like it as it is now But thanks for the idea.

Ah okay cool Yes perhaps it should slow down slower - like in the original asteroids. In fact in space nothing would actually ever stop moving, if somethings floating in zero gravity, if you tap it, it'll float around the earth forrever unless it hits something A bit like in Atari Asteroids

Anyway cool little game I'll be interested to see how it progresses

There's a free version of Quikly Model Pro for TGC Forum users! If you haven't got it yet you should order yours, its FREEEEeeee (In this months TGC newsletter, or [href]www.quikly.com/forums[href])

I'm sorry for the shameless plug, but its free and really would do the job very nicely in a few minutes - plus you have the bonus of being able to see how your model will look in dbpro as you're modelling it

But I don't got the time to use it too much right now, too much happening around

I will try to use it when I get the time.

Little new update here!

I finally got the new model for the enemy ships. And it's nice! With texture too Thanks to Frozen Flame for this! Those little fellas are only on around 20 polys, which means that I can have loads of them without getting a bad framerate!

Here you got the new picture:

And just to make a little diffrence, I tried using another background. They look so awsome! Thanks for that Scraggle!

Well, now I just need to get some things with the enemy system improved and then it's time to move on to other features and improvements!

Although you might want to scale the background to make the planets round not oval.

Other than that looks really cool I like the look of the ships

Oh! I didn't really notice that! Thanks for saying that.

@To all:

I don't really know when there will be released a new demo as I got alot of things about the game that i'm messing around with So I won't promise anything. Althought i'm thinking about making the WHOLE game script based with LUA. This WILL take some time, to get the whole source splitted into functional scripts But it will make development for me much easier! I got selected to pick a 20 liner and write a review about it for the newsletters And that's sure fun! But as a little extra I get to pick a dll from tgc's website as soon as Richard approves my reviews I think i'm gonna pick LUA, that would sure help out my project Thanks to Richard for making this a possible choise for me!

first - no prblem - I seem to be pointing that out to a lot of people at the moment - maybe it annoys me more than it should lol.

Anyway that all sounds very cool - a lua scripted version would be great so people could edit it and add their own waves, attack patterns etc...

If I make it with scripts, I would problaly compile my scrips with a LUA compiler, so it would be un-readable for users I don't want people to "destroy" the game experience or cheat by changing the scripts. Scripting would only be for me getting a nicer development enviroment, and to try something new

But honest I don't think the first version will be made with script. If I will make a SpaceBattle Shootout 2, I will make a game engine with the scripts

he Sorry but I didn't get the newsletter part.. How will it help with what newsletter content?

I've optimized the game It was a simple task.. I just changed all my .x models to .dbo.. And I got faster loading times!
Also Frozen Flame have made a new enemy for me! Here you got a small picture of it:
http://www.galekus.com/images/ship2.JPG

This little enemy will fly around rotating, and it will also shoot. But if you crash into it, you will loose more energy and more points of your highscore than the other enemy

NOTE: This enemy is not implemented yet

Also I've found a new feature that will go in the game. I will make achievements for the game This will make the game more addicting because you'll have goals to accomplish... Get all the achievements and you complete the game. The achievements could be something like:

*Get 2500 points
*Get 1500 points without dying

etc...

I think that will be fun!

I'm looking forward to releasing Demo 3. When the new enemy is implemted and a new menu have been made, and some small fixes to make the version more stable, I will release Demo 3 It should hopefully be more stable than Demo 1 and 2... Especially version 2 I wasn't happy with... It was released a little too early I think... Lets hope Demo 3 will be better!

"I got selected to pick a 20 liner and write a review about it for the newsletters And that's sure fun! But as a little extra I get to pick a dll from tgc's website as soon as Richard approves my reviews I think i'm gonna pick LUA, that would sure help out my project Thanks to Richard for making this a possible choise for me!"
I took that to mean that you are writing content for the newsletter and that you would be writing about LUA for them? Hense why I thought trying it out in this game would help you write the article? Sorry if I missunderstood

Looking forward to demo 3

Okay guys. A little update here to keep this thread updated with the latest progress And so you can see how close Demo 3 is to a release

I just started making some menu graphics today... Sure they aren't good... But they're better than nothing!
If they really are gonna be that bad, I can use them as placeholders...

This game looks great so far, however the ships look a bit dull, I think if they were more vibrant then MaNar and GeeCee should be looking out for their next "rival" in the realm of arcade shooters.

Gameplay wise it was pretty fun for a very simple demo, my only problem was that I felt that the ship should slow down as opposed to instantly stop when you stop pressing forward. However the AI was pretty good for an asteroids game and I was really impressed at how they actually to fire towards me instead of random directions, etc.

Overall this early demo of the game would earn around a 7.4/10 from me.

Nice job The Nerd.

Others have complained about this. There IS actually a acceleration/de-acceleration system in it... But the maximum numbers are too small and the decimals too big to notice it...
I will fix this.

YAY! A good comment on the AI!
Thanks!

Hmmm... I may be able to do something about the ships... I'm not the one making them I got one to do that for me.(Frozen Flame)

Wooo! I can be a rival!.....

YAY!

Thanks for the very good comments! I think this post was very constructive.
