Seriously, if you haven't already, try Cyanogen. I've been using it for an hour and it feels like a whole new phone. iPhones do have their issues, why do you think I left for Android?

I've always read about alternative Android builds and launchers but I've never tried them. What are the advantages?

CyanogenMod over TouchWiz:
Doesn't run like utter crap, I can press the button to change apps, and it'll appear, unlike with TouchWiz where I'll press it, my entire phone will freeze up for a second or two (doesn't sound like much, but it's infuriating).

Rooted by default, so you get all the benefits of rooting.

More up to date, Samsung only released 5.0.2 or something for TouchWiz, I'm on 5.1 now with Cyanogen.

It's more a cumulation of things, it just feels more complete now, everything is more consistent - it doesn't feel like it's just been cobbled together, everything is smoother, even the default apps are nicer. I really like the default messaging app with Cyanogen. The default keyboard is amazing, I don't even know what it is.

I would be tempted to give this a go, but sadly, it would void my warranty. Maybe when it's OOW, but I'll be able to upgrade when that happens.

Ooh that said, I just remembered I have a Nexus 10 tablet, pretty sure that's out of warranty now, so might try it on that.

True, but I don't really see anything going wrong with my phone that warranty would cover. I have insurance for anything else.

It's definitely going on my old Android devices I'd love to try something like Cyanogen on my active phone but it would probably break the Samsung Gear VR tools that are built in My old phone is currently going unused and my old tablet has such bad performance it's almost inoperable. If anything reinstalling Android will at least clean it up Do I need to backup my files first? I haven't looked into it in that great of detail.

Awesome! I shall have to research there. Thanks for the link.

Quote: "What about putting little wheels on the edges, where it has to wrap around?"
This would work perfectly, and I have thought about doing it this way for a long time. I suppose the only problem is getting enough of the wheels to build what I want to build for a reasonable price. If I were to undertake building a computer out of strings, I would most certainly need things like wheels, a really precise and efficient way of attaching strings in the exact correct position, and some way of fabricating a designed frame on which to mount all of the stuff (perhaps 3D printed or milled from wood).

Regarding all the Android talk, I have recently acquired a desire for an iPhone to replace my Android. The iPhone 5s seems nice; I am not really a huge fan of the iPhone 6's design. The sharp edges on the 5s make it a good bit more slick looking than the 6, in my opinion. And I never have development needs for my phone anymore (never really did anyway), so the iPhone would be a good option.

Yeah say bye bye to anything propitiatory, there might be ways to hack it in but you'd have to Google it.

Yes you'll have to back everything up, it practically deletes everything then extracts a zip onto the internal storage. (At least, that's my understanding of it.)

You need to install a custom recovery, I used Clockwork Mod.

I suppose that should have been a given haha then again I don't think there's anything on there that I still need (I cleaned it all out at some point). The interesting part will be finding the right version of Cyanogen to use because I doubt lollipop will run on there. (the old phone is an LG Lucid)

Edit: A quick google search seems to show that it wouldn't officially be supported but this is probably my answer. Not sure how worthwhile this would be given that it's a custom custom version

You won't see as much of a difference putting Cyanogenmod on a Nexus device. They're already "stock" Android and very close to AOSP Android (which is what CM is built on).

Quote: "Do I need to backup my files first? I haven't looked into it in that great of detail."

YES! Definitely! Theoretically any files on an external SD card won't be touched, but to be safest you should physically remove any SD cards.

Your best bet when installing a custom rom is to copy any important files that you want to keep to your desktop, then use Titanium Backup to back up all your apps and copy them to your desktop, then take screenshots of your home screens and copy them to your desktop (if, like me, you want your home screens to always be laid out the same way), then wipe everything and install the rom. After it's installed, use Titanium Backup to reinstall all your apps and restore their data. Be aware that some paid apps can't be backed up with TB and you may have to find and copy their savegames manually.

Quote: "I tried to give it more chances but it just gets worse and worse. Ads, ads and more ads!"

The most useful thing you can do to solve that is root your phone and install AdAway. It's an Android-wide ad blocker.

“I want to speak to a manager,” the middle-aged woman said in her stern I-used-to-be-a-soccer-mom-ten-years-ago voice, looking down at me over the top of her Gucci reading glasses.

A wicked grin split across my face and the gates of Hell opened up behind me, releasing a gust of blistering wind that whipped my apron around my body and forced the woman to shield her face. Demons came forth, dancing around in flames with songs of, “She wants to speak to a manager. Did you hear that? She wants to speak to a manager!” before erupting into earsplitting shrieks of laughter, none louder than my own cackling.

I took in the woman’s look of utter horror before my eyes rolled back into my skull and I growled,

“I am the manager.”

Well, I did it. TMobile was offering a NEW! iPhone 5S, Space Grey, 64GB, for ~$30. I couldn't believe it, so I snatched it up. It should arrive on June 1st, and upon its arrival, I shall let it charge for a day (or hour, anyway), and then call and activate it. I can then send my HTC One M8 through the mail in order to trade it in and use its value as credit on my bill. Best part is, it will actually make my monthly bill less expensive since it's a previous generation phone, and Tmobile lets you pay for a phone either all in one go, or through monthly payments. Currently, my bills is $70.40/month, so it should go down to about $64.30ish. It's only six dollars, but hey, that's a Big Mac meal!

I don't regret my purchase, and I can't wait to finally have an iPhone. Especially a 64GB model, even with all of my music and photos transferred over it will take up less than 10GB.

My only question is... can anybody recommend a good case?

Great deal! Verizon, my carrier, offers a 5S with a 2 year contract for 100 dollars. I really want it, and can afford it, but I should probably do the smart thing and not get one. My Android phone does do everything I need it to.

Quote: "My only question is... can anybody recommend a good case?"
Sure!

Another random post about random stuff for anyone who wants to read: I always bring earplugs with me, since I have an audiological disorder known as misophonia. Because of it, the sound of another person eating drives my emotions over the top. I carry the earplugs around with me at all times in case I need them. I have found that the earplugs, which are the foam type, aren't really general audio attenuators so much as they are low pass filters. They block higher pitched sounds quite well, like the sound of people eating. Lower sounds, like those of people running around above my bedroom while I am trying to sleep in (gah), don't get blocked so well. So I did an experiment out of utter boredom. I put an earplug in one ear, but left the other one open. Then I placed on my headphones and used Audacity to play a range of different frequency tones equally into both ears. Sure enough, the lower pitched tones felt almost the same in both ears, whereas higher pitched noises were painful in the open ear but almost inaudible in the plugged ear. I knew the experiment would do just that, but it was still interesting.

Speaking of low pass filters, I recently came across a video review of an epic pair of $1,000 dollar earbuds, the Shure SE846. Now, I think the technology these earbuds use is absolutely ingenious.

Those squarish metal canisters on the left side of the image are four different drivers, each intended to produce a different range of frequencies, just like found in professional audio systems used for an open spaces. Here's the cool part: that layered looking bit on the right side of the metal canisters (where the sound flows out toward the ear) is a low pass filter. Exploded, said filter looks like this:

You can follow the tortuous path the sound has to take to get from the largest, lowest frequency driver all the way to the other end of the low pass filter. I read somewhere on the website that said path totals out to about 4 inches. Sound traveling through such a long path, of course, experiences some high end attenuation. Genius design! What I like even more about it is how easy that probably is to manufacture; just laser cut some patterns in a thin sheet of metal, cut that up into a few small pieces, then stack those together. Boom! You have a low pass filter suitable for usage in something as small as an earbud. The blue bit in the upper image seems to be some sort of response leveler that can be replaced with others of different characteristics.

Of course, I ended up doing my own experiment to this end. I wanted to create a low pass filter out of paper layers and hear it work, but the most I achieved was creating a small passageway of paper through which sound could travel.

The gray areas on the layers are where paper had been removed. I pushed one of my excellent quality 8 dollar earbuds onto one hole with music playing, and sound came out the other hole! Crazy that it would do that, eh? I still got a kick out of it. No low pass filter sadly. I did end up having to use 5 layers (possibly fewer, but I never tried that) as with only 1 layer, no sound passed. Presumably, the top layer pushed down and made contact with the bottom layer, blocking the passage. That reminds me of another idea I have had for a while, regarding the construction of some simple, alternative type of computer/processor.

The entire logic circuit would be constructed of multiple layers of some flexible material (like plastic) with designs cut into them. Individual "transistors", if you will, would be constructed as passages, similar to the passage I created for sound, that would be blocked or unblocked by the pressure of a fluid (gas or liquid) pressing or not pressing down on the layer directly above the passage. Ah nevermind, seems this has already been done: http://www.rsc.org/suppdata/LC/b9/b904354c/b904354c.pdf. Still neat! Now I want to make my own, somehow... Probably impossible with my tools.

On the side, I came across this interesting article about a new (well, the article is almost a year old) development NASA may have with transistors.

TGC Presidential Elections coming up soon again! The current presidential and vice presidential terms end I believe on the 17th of June.

Whatever gets the vote for you!

We should have a Constitutional Convention of sorts and draft a constitution for the upcoming presidents to follow. It wouldn't really have any power, of course, but it would be fun. Let's design it off the American system! We could have, say, three senators (two elected once per three months or so, the other being the vice president) that vote on "bills" and such, which the president would then have the power to sign or veto. A two thirds vote from the congress could override a veto. Any law signed or of an overridden veto would then become the president's duty to enforce. As for the judicial branch, pft, nobody needs those! Let the government be tyrannical in all it does (considering it would have no power). I like the idea!

Yeah! Higher quality systems is probably a better way to say that. Like the all new Apple Speaker; the gem uses "over 3,000 specially tuned, omnidirectional, patent pending micro drivers that each produce a slightly different range of frequencies that fill the space with a warm, crisp, clear sound like no other device on the market". http://www.apple.com/speaker

Ah! Good input there. While a bit early, I think I am going to announce my running here. I'll create some rules (subject to change if needed), before the initial election thread is created:

Any individual may announce their candidacy for TGC Forum President in the Posting Competition or any election related thread created in the future. Announcements of candidacy must be made before June 10*. Each individual to announce their candidacy must, within their announcement, select a vice president who is not their own self. The selected vice president may be any other individual, and should accept their invitation to vice presidency in order for the ticket to be valid. On June 10-14*, a five day voting period shall occur. June 15-16* shall serve as a period for the elected presidents to gather themselves, prepare inaugural speeches, etc. The presidents shall assume office June 17*.

*each date listed starts on said date at 12:00 AM Central Time.

I hereby announce my candidacy for TGC Forum President. If he shall accept, I select TheComet as my running vice president.

Quote: "Total Threads: 199,990"

We're about to surpass 200,000 threads!

Personally I feel like it should be GMT+0/UTC+0 but that would make it more difficult for you to organise.

Wait, can we even choose a President candidate as a Vice President? Ugh, "president" is starting to sound silly now

I thought about this. It would make it a bit more difficult for me to organize, but not too much. I could also base it off of server time and such. But yeah, the rules are still up to change if needed (including what I discuss below), and 10th of June is still a bit off, so we have plenty of time to get it all sorted out.

Quote: "I hereby announce my candidacy for TGC Forum President. If he shall accept, I select Dark Java Dude 64 as my running vice president."
Sweet! I absolutely accept.

Quote: "Wait, can we even choose a President candidate as a Vice President?"
Well, I don't see why not! I personally believe a running president should be free to select any person as their vice president. If you feel the need to, Clonkex, feel free to change your vice presidential selection. And vice versa too; I don't think that being selected as a vice president should disqualify one from running for president if they wish. TheComet should still be totally fine to run for president if he wants, even though I have selected him as my vice president. Extended even further, I think it should be alright for multiple running presidents to select the same vice president. Of course, a person running for president definitely shouldn't select more than one vice president, but I suppose that would be impossible anyway.

I am totally open to any input on election rules and such.

In order to give the presidents some sort of meaning, I do think we should all discuss what the presidents will do and such. We could, through a constitution of sorts, give the presidents a variety of tasks or goals to be accomplished, such as putting forth an effort to lead, expand, invigorate, and add to the community, etc. These rules could be enforceable via some clause in the constitution specifying that the community may, at any time, vote to impeach the president and initiate an election for a new president. The constitution itself would be enacted upon some majority vote of the community that would occur during or before the main presidential election. Perhaps I will start drafting one!

Alright, I have drafted a constitution!

PREAMBLE
For the general welfare of the TGC Community Forum, we, the members thereof, find it necessary that a constitution be enacted to regulate the elections, duties, terms, and impeachments of the Presidents and Vice Presidents of the TGC Forum.

ARTICLE 1 -- Elections
Any community member may choose to enter candidacy for president. Each candidate shall, upon their announcement of candidacy, select any other community member to be their vice president. Upon said selected community member’s acceptance, a ticket comprising the candidate president and their selected vice president shall exist. A one hundred and twenty hour period shall be provided during which each member of the community shall have the freedom to cast one vote for any one ticket of their choice. The ticket receiving the greatest number of points shall, forty eight hours after the end of the voting period, assume office. If more than one ticket shall receive the greatest number of votes, the active president shall choose which ticket will assume office. Upon a ticket’s assumption of office, the candidate president of said ticket shall become TGC Forum President, and the candidate president’s selected vice president shall become TGC Forum Vice President.

If the President shall exhibit an absence from the forum exceeding sixty days, or if the President shall announce a resignation from his Presidency, he shall lose his status as President. The Vice President shall then become the President and select any other member of the community to become Vice President. Said selected community member shall become Vice President upon their acceptance.

ARTICLE 2 -- Duties
It shall be the duty of the President to put forth an effort to lead, participate in, expand, add to, invigorate, and generally provide for the betterment of the community. It shall be the duty of the Vice President to, at the President’s request, assist the President in the execution of his duties. The Vice President should take care to serve as a representative of the the community to the President. The Vice President shall assume the duties of the President when the President is absent and cannot carry out his duties.

At the end of the presidential term, the President shall host and carry out an election pursuant to Article 1.

ARTICLE 3 -- Terms and Impeachment
If any community member shall hold status as President for twelve months, pursuant to Articles 1 and 2, an election shall be held to elect a new President and Vice President.

If the community shall at any time see it fit, a forty eight hour period shall occur during which each member of the community shall have the freedom to vote for or against the impeachment of the President. If the majority of voting members shall vote for the impeachment of the President, the President shall lose his status as President. A new President shall be elected pursuant to Article 1, excepting that only a candidate president shall run as a ticket, and no new Vice President shall be elected.

If the President shall at any time see it fit, a forty eight hour period shall occur during which each member of the community shall have the freedom to vote for or against the impeachment of the Vice President. If the majority of voting members shall vote for the impeachment of the Vice President, the Vice President shall lose his status as Vice President. The President shall then select any other community member to be Vice President. Said selected community member shall become Vice President upon their acceptance.

ARTICLE 4 -- Constitutional Amendments
If the community shall at any time see it fit, a forty eight hour period shall occur during which each member of the community shall have the freedom to vote for or against an amendment to this document proposed by any member of the community. If two thirds or more of the voting members shall vote for the amendment, and if the President shall approve, the amendment shall become a valid component of this document.

ARTICLE 5 -- Enactment
If a majority of the community members voting for or against the enactment of this document within a one hundred and twenty hour period shall vote for the enactment of this document, this document shall be enacted. Upon enactment, this document shall regulate the elections, duties, terms, and impeachments of Presidents and Vice Presidents of the TGC Forum. This document shall also, upon enactment, regulate its amendment.

Haha, all is good. I have it saved elsewhere. I am just getting some initial feedback here before I make a big deal out of it.

I think I found the iPhone 5S case I'll get. Looks bulky, but durable. Now I just need to find screen protectors (although I haven't used screen protectors since my first phone, as they tend to reduce the quality of the screen and responsiveness of touch, and I have yet to truly scratch a screen). Just to be safe.

Good ol' Metallica. Heard this on the radio the other day while cruisin'. Didn't realize it was used in MI2.

Wow, been such a long time since I've watched that music video, I am feeling a little nostalgic from the era.

It's a good track, but I am bigger fan of their older stuff. Kill 'Em All, Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning. But then I loves Thrash Metal, so only natural that I would prefer their Thrash days.

Also love their cover of Diamond Head's Am I Evil, is a nice demonstration to see how thrash metal evolved.

[Warning: Language]

Versus Diamond Head's

Anyway, I decided to try and learn jQuery to use in my project, as it's supposed to be a very useful JavaScript library versus native JavaScript. And wow, it's pretty awesome. When I first saw it, it looked quite weird and didn't make much sense looking at it, but works wonderfully, love how you can just stack methods on particular elements, like:

$(".menu).siblings().removeClass("selected").addClass("disabled").Text("disabled").highFiveTheArchbishopOfCanterbury();

So this picks any item with the "menu" class, finds their siblings, removes any "selected" classes that may be attached (may be for functional or styling purposes), add a class called "disabled", insert text in between the HTML tags and then to top it off, have the siblings high five the arch bishop of Canterbury...okay, that's not a jQuery method, but it should be.

And because it's very CSS centric, it makes like a lot easier selecting elements and manipulating them, their styles and the HTML. Given I have tried writing using plain JavaScript before now, this is a lot less long winded. So I can see why it's generally recommended by people.

As far as I'm concerned, these are the only Metallica albums.

So my Android phone is an LG Lucid 2; it runs 4.1.2, and it has since I got it over two years ago. Well, being a lower end phone, it ain't gonna get updated in the future. It also has a crap top of LG and Verizon bloatware installed on it, and I want that all gone. Is there any way I can get rid of all that and update to the latest version?

Play Store has also totally stopped working the other day. When I start it, the window pops up but almost instantly disappears again. I have cleared the cache, cleared the data, enabled downloads, etc -- all the stuff the websites say to do. All to no avail!

I am thinking a factory reset should fix the Play Store, but that probably wouldn't get rid of the bloatware or allow me to update to the newest version of Android. Does anyone here have any suggestions for what I could do to fix any of these issues?

First step is to see if there's a Cyanogenmod build for it. Hmm, doesn't look like there is. Well, there's the Xperion rom. Doesn't update to Lollipop or really change much, but it would give you a fresh look and allow you to remove all bloatware (simply because you would wipe the phone to install the rom).

Anyway, I have news.

------------------------------------

Our YouTube channel is launched!! Hooray!

We are... the Flash Buddies!

AND my job has allowed me to purchase a Blue Yeti microphone for far better group recordings! It arrived today and it's SO FREAKING HEAVY. And big. Totally awesome, in fact

We're going to have a somewhat reliable video release schedule (Monday and Friday I think we decided) at a rate of two videos a week (to begin with). Obviously a there's a lot of work to go yet (the intro for the video is a little dumb, but I haven't finished the animation that we plan to use yet) but new channels are allowed to be a bit wonky to start with

We love making the videos and can't wait to do more!

Incidentally, my sister Alex drew the characters for the banner from scratch, using Google Images as reference for partial poses. She's bl**dy good at drawing - particularly when she's using my $350 Wacom tablet

EDIT: Hmm. It rather feels like I'm constantly bragging about all the expensive things I've bought. Oh well, that's half the fun of buying expensive things (seriously though, tell me to stop if anyone's finding it annoying or depressing )

I have the same mic and it is quite heavy. Make sure to get a good shock mount, not many are made to support the weight.

@Seppuku/budo:

Indeed, Metallica's older stuff is much better than their newer stuff. Some of their newer stuff is ok though. But definitely not as good.

Now, here's a tune everyone can get behind! Haven't you heard?!

Yeah I know. The mic is so sensitive that at first it was picking up the vibrations of my computer through the desk the mic was sitting on - and the computer was only on the floor NEXT to the desk! Sitting it on a thick pile of PJs isolated it from "hum" vibrations but not from keyboard taps so we're looking into the best place to mount the thing. Ideally it would be hung upside-down from the ceiling in a shock mount, just above the computer monitor.

Gah, this online audio player is horrible. Near as I can tell, it uses the graphical position of the loading bar and the playing bar to determine if it can play or not, not how much it actually has played and how much it actually has loaded. How do I know this? Well for some reason, when you first load up the audio player, the audio has to load about a quarter of the full way for it to figure out how fast the playing bar should move. It starts moving really quick across the screen, then suddenly realizes it's too far, and moves back to where it should be. Which means the playing bar doesn't even accurately represent how much audio has played, but just how much time the audio has played and a speed it figures the bar should be moving while the audio is playing. So, when you first load the player, assuming it's a longer audio file (like 50 minutes), the play bar quickly surpasses the loading bar, causing it to stop playing (even though the audio is, in fact, loading much faster than it is playing). You have to wait about a whole minute for the loading bar to get a quarter of the way across the screen, at which point the player finally realizes the playing bar is too far, puts it in the right place, and then decides it can play. Fail!

Out of curiosity, anyone know if it's possible to remove one recording from another? I.e. if I record my voice near my computer but my brother (who is recording his voice) is close enough that my mic picks up his voice. I want to try to remove his recording from mine (and vice versa).

Exactly what I was thinking

Haha ok

---------------------------------------------

Anyone else feel like it's sometimes ridiculously hard to find in-depth, technical information on the internet? It feels a bit silly that despite the enormous depth of human knowledge about the world around us it's really hard to actually find that knowledge.

---------------------------------------------

Well after recording a multi-computer video (GTA V) and recording our voices with headset mics, we've decided we need better mics for multi-PC recording - so I've bought 3 Blue Snowball microphones. I'll use my Yeti and the other three will use their Snowballs The biggest issue now is isolating my voice from my brother's, since we're currently recording in the same room

A client is buying me one of these

I could get 128GB but... I think higher speed 64GB would save more time doing data intensive stuff... I only need this for creating USB recovery media stuff for some systems...

What are you using for recording? if you have three laptops you can record individually and place on timeline after cleaning up?

EDIT

Just reread what you wrote... You need a sound filter... Clean up background sound... You could also channel the recording to remove outside sound... Hard for me to explain LOL 😁 what software are you using?

No, it is not possible. At best you could remove some noise but it would garble the sound and make it sound AWFUL.

The best solution I can think of is this; turn down your mic recording volume as best as you can and get your mic as close to your mouth as possible. This is how they do it in Hollywood for movies; the actual microphone recording volume is set to the lowest possible point so as not to pick up any extra noise, and the microphone is as close to the person's mouth as possible.

To aid in this, you may want to try "sound blankets" - hang several sheets of sound-absorbing material between your desk and your brother and it will help to dampen the sounds of his voice.

I was going to suggest the same as Yodaman Jer, get something up between you... the low mic recording level sounds [mic gain] like a solid plan too...

If it's possible Clonkex, try to record in separate rooms. I know you're in a bus though, so that might not be possible, so that's why I thought of sound blankets. Get some heavy-duty and thick comforters/quilts, towels, whatever you have, and use them to your advantage!

I too have wanted the Blue Yeti microphone, although I might go with the Snowball since it's quality is pretty similar (though not as "rounded" if you know what I mean).

This is the setup:

- Me on my PC (not laptop) in my bedroom (our blue bus), recording with a Blue Yeti.
- My brother on his PC (not laptop) also in our the bus, recording with a Snowball (and about 2.5-3m away from me, facing 90 degrees away).
- Our sisters with their laptops in a caravan and our granny flat, recording with Snowballs. They're not an issue in the slightest. (Incidentally none of the Snowballs have actually arrived - we only bought them today)

Quote: "No, it is not possible. At best you could remove some noise but it would garble the sound and make it sound AWFUL."

That's what I thought.

This is what I was thinking, but it seemed like a bit of a "hacky" idea. Plus it's a Blue Yeti so it won't be easy to get it close to my mouth.

Quote: "To aid in this, you may want to try "sound blankets" - hang several sheets of sound-absorbing material between your desk and your brother and it will help to dampen the sounds of his voice."

We had that idea. We have a metric crap-tonne of old, heavy woollen curtains. We got about four of them, make holes along the top, cable-tied them together and then put picture hooks in the roof of the bus and hung them up. They helped a bit but not as much as we really need.

I'm sure we can come up with a viable and useful solution

If you have each others recordings then it's possible to 'subtract', but I'm not sure how effective it is. Or what software supports it. Sorry.
