If that information is at all correct for AMD, that is a steal for what will undoubtedly be a ridiculously powerful card. The current 290X is still $550+, so... wow, if this is true, this will probably help solidify AMD's standing in the current GPU cycle.

Also I will save up for this puppy and buy it for myself for my Birthday

EDIT:

Clonkex, I have been running for President with you as my VP nominee for a few days in case you didn't know. I might've forgotten to properly ask if you were interested in that.

Upon further research (and more attentive reading on my part), the 390X will be a rehash of the current 290X... c'mon AMD, don't do that crap again!

Still it would be a more powerful card than I have now, and if I crossfire them? Wowwwwwweeeeeeee what a beefy computer that would be!

lol that'd be awesome! I had been going to run for president myself with DJD as my VP but there's no way I have time for that now, so it'd be great to VP

Not the band as such, but there's a well-known church in Sydney called Hillsong Church (a so-called "megachurch", in fact) - I guess the church is the band (or at least is affiliated with it).

Thank you for accepting the role as my VP, Clonkex! Together we shall rule TGC in quite a formal fashion!

Also, guys, I found the monitor I'm going to buy. It's 1440p, IPS, and it's LESS THAN $300!

You may remember back in January I was attempting to find a monitor that was IPS and 1440p under $300, which seemed impossible since monitors of that resolution/panel type usually range in the $400-$700+ spectrum of currency.

I have the money. I want to plop it down right now! But I'm not sure I should just yet, not until my bills are paid for the month...

27", for $599 according to Engadget.

I don't seem to suffer from much "stutter" effects since the 280X is a decent enough card to run most things on at least High. I can't stand tearing so I always enable VSync, drives me nuts otherwise!

I think I'll stick with the Acer I found earlier, while I can't get it yet it will be mine very very soon haha!

Can someone please talk some sense into this guy? He's claiming that humans cannot see more than 30fps, and that timer-based movement breaks if you don't have the right frame-rate (ie. the opposite of reality).

I'm not sure I want to. He seems to be misunderstanding the basic premise of timer-based movement. Though DBP has had issues with inaccurate clocks that can cause issues with timer-based movement due to inaccurate time differences, most game engines do indeed decouple rendering from physics/logic updating through either multithreading or various other techniques. If GG is using DBP still then it's not multithreaded, which makes it significantly harder to completely decouple rendering from logic/physics.

There's a few. Freesync is becoming more popular due to how much cheaper it is to implement on the monitor maker's side.

Well guys, I went ahead and plopped down my digital cash for that monitor because Amazon only had 4 left and nowhere else could I find it new for $249!

After tax and two day shipping (so I'll get it on Friday, yay!), it came to about $287 - not bad, a 1440p 25" IPS display for that little would have been unheard of last summer! In fact I know it was because I looked for one for ages and gave up.

I will take pictures and post them the day that I get it!

Ah! I have noticed what may be a new YouTube feature: when watching a lot of videos from the same channel, all of which have the same roughly 10 second long intro, YouTube seems to begin auto skipping the intro. Super handy! I am observing it in a playlist put together by the channel; not sure if that's something that the channel owner set it to do, or if it's an automatic feature. Neat nonetheless!

Aye, this mouthwash the dentist gave me (Peridex) makes everything I eat taste different. Water tastes strange. Salt tastes extremely bitter. Milk tastes better than normal. Parmesan cheese tastes like rubber.

Odd, DJD64, everything has tasted very weird to me lately. However I was born with a condition known as "Geographic Tongue", so named because how it works is that my tongue literally sheds papilla in chunks at a time, and so it looks like a view of the globe.

Because it does this, different taste buds can be exposed or unexposed, and so things will taste very differently from one day to the next, especially if it is a spice-heavy food.

One day it was so bad, ice cream with caramel syrup on it tasted just like I was eating plain, frozen butter. That was on my 9th birthday I believe.

I'm so used to it now though, I hardly notice when I have it. I noticed today because my coffee tastes burnt but I just brewed it so that can't be...

Sigh, if you guys ever want to know how not to conduct an argument, take a look at this guy's posts on this thread. Apparently the best way to defeat someone in an argument is to attack their credentials and not try to rebut any of the points. It's a shame no one else joined in because TBM is probably understood by a lot of programmers here. I don't particularly want to see TGC's flagship product brought down by dodgy code, especially by arrogant amateurs that refuse to address valid points.

I read through the thread. If someone is falling back to authoritative arguments then it usually means 1) they don't know how to argue or 2) they don't know what they're talking about. The argument has no grounds in logical reasoning.

Stab in the Dark software is providing physics support to GG by wrapping a well known physics library, BulletPhysics.

I am surprised to read, however, that Stab in the Dark software is displaying a complete lack of understanding of how bullet handles simulation steps.

The following quotes are from Stab in the Dark software.
Quote: "
so a higher frame rate won't produce any issues."

If you actually believe this then there is no helping you.
I guess if you actually knew how to program a game engine you would have and would not be using GG.
Quote: "It is not completely independent of frame rate. It is adjusted based on the frame rate to keep the physics in sync.
The physics code will have a range limitation where it works best say between 30 and 60 FPS."

These are false statements.

http://bulletphysics.org/mediawiki-1.5.8/index.php/Stepping_The_World

The whole point of btDynamicsWorld::stepSimulation() is to be frame rate independent (as stated on their wiki page); this means the game can run at a million FPS or at 1 FPS, the physics simulation will always continue at a constant rate. The intended use of this function is to pass the time since the last frame was simulated as timeStep. Bullet has a clever mechanism of simulating "substeps" and interpolating between them in order to allow a deterministic simulation (which is very important for networked games using lockstep synchronisation for instance).

This is pure speculation, but I can imagine Stab in the Dark software has incorrectly been using this function. For example, something like stepSimulation(btScalar(1.0 / getFrameRate())); will make the simulation somewhat dependent on frame rate, because getFrameRate() depends on the average time of the last n number of frames, and will be entirely inaccurate in extreme cases.

The correct usage would be to make it dependent on CPU up time, something along the lines of:

Bullet has provided an example of a canonical game loop on their wiki page to show how to correctly step the world.

*Puts on his moderator hat on* We have hats, right? RIGHT!?

No arguing here. I don't like slapping people and this forum doesn't have the option to "roundhouse kick" users, which would be my preferred method. Not because I wish violence upon any of you, I just love roundhouse kicks.

Now, my weird humour aside, a mod has locked said thread /because/ of the argument. Let's not let it spread into other parts of the forum, else said mod's locking of said thread would be a little redundant. Let's not make his (or her) actions redundant and can it, because it serves no real purpose than the ability to say "I am right", but it is more turning into a mud fight and not an actual discussion.

As the mod in the thread said, you have both had your say, let's leave it at that and move on and leave the drama at the door.

Slaps will be issued if folk cannot leave it at the door.

I've just started sig list inception.

Ahh, Spotify's latest (non optional) update is crap. I typically use the recent searches menu (which drops down from the search bar) to navigate among the various artists I listen to frequently. It used to be that the only thing that would clear said list was clicking the "Clear Recent Searches" button, but now it seems to maintain entries no longer than a day. Even restarting the application clears it. Pft.

I also HATE when any software/website is slowed down by ads. With Spotify's newest update, the entire program hangs whenever it's waiting to load an ad. Pffffffffft.

No, I hadn't noticed. Then again I don't have any games in my wishlist, so...

That GG thread reminded me of this very interesting topic: the human eye can definitely see the difference between 30fps and 60fps. Some people claim the difference is only felt through decreased input lag in games, but without a doubt I can look at any YouTube video and tell you what the framerate is. With YouTube on Auto mode, both my brother and I can instantly tell when it switches up to 60fps. I've never looked at a 144Hz monitor, but I'd be curious to see if I can tell the difference between 60fps and 144fps just by looking at it

Got your ticket, Seditious. I see you maintained the transparency of the image nicely!

My dear and fellow TGC forum dwellers,

I come to you again in earnest to discuss the current state of the presidential race leading up to the elections. My ticket's primary opponent, the ticket of Yodaman Jer and Clonkex, has taken a turn for the worst. They are exhibiting a strategy of striking non-professionalism, presumably in hopes that they might appear more "common" with the ordinary forum dweller. We must be aware, my fellow forum dwellers, that we are a forum of extraordinary individuals. We should not fall into the attractive grip of the falsely purported commonality of my opposing ticket. This forum needs a strong, devoted, professional leader if it shall see the light of day in the year to come.

My fellow forum dwellers, I additionally urge you to be alert of my primary opponent's suspect words regarding the goings of the future election. He continues to, with great over-confidence, assert the fact that he shall indeed win. In reality, of course, these words are merely of his attempt to craftily insert the prospect and certainty of his winning into your minds, as if you, my fellow forum dwellers, were actually that gullible. My opponent has, in addition, frequently made odd and uncanny jokes about rigging the voting process. Shall we, the unique forum that we are, succumb to the grips of the so-called "leadership" of a man who exploits the incorrectly evaluated thereby minds of you, my fellow forum dwellers, for his winning? Shall we allow our president to be one who, as a result of his jokes of terrible things, by no means is able to prove his stability? I should think not.

My fellow forum dwellers, I finally urge you to be keenly aware of my primary opponent's opposition to the constitution I have proposed. The constitution I have proposed grants power only to the community of this invaluable forum. To the president, the constitution only grants a responsibility, the propriety and overall execution of which is enforced by the impeachment power granted upon the community by the constitution. The constitution's goal is plain and simple -- to make the forum a better place. Should the constitution indeed be ratified by you, my fellow forum dwellers, shall we deem it a good idea to allow into power a man who has stated that the best type of government, one without the constitution I have proposed, is a free-for-all? I should think not. Of course, should the constitution be ratified and my opponent elected, his presidency shall be terminated by you, my fellow forum dwellers, should he fail to uphold his duties to make the forum a better place. He shall consider himself warned duly.

This forum needs a strong, devoted, transparent, growth supporting leader. I pledge to be the leader the TGC forum needs. My fellow forum dwellers, I think the decision is simple. Vote DJD64 and Comet.
