@Bobbyd
Nice code
I like the way you stored the mouse positions in variables, few noobs see the advantages of that method.
Your indentation is slightly off, I've tidied it up...

I put the old values in the mouseclick condition because we dont need to update them unless we're drawing. I also added an else to the statement because the way you had it, the first line would always start at 0,0.

Do you know how to use the SYNC commands? It would make your program run a lot smoother.

That z scrolling is clever, you could use it to scroll through a set colour pallete for quick colour changes.

If I was grading your work I'd give you a C+; this could have been a B if you had a manual sync and accounted for the start position of the first line.
Good job

I think bobbyd has shown how simple a good paint program can be.

right now its a old-zelda style adventure/rpg game

however there is currently debate on whether or not to end the project

and actually I disagree with the c+, I say he should have at least goten a b for his creativity, Ive been programming for 2 years with DarkBASIC and I never thought to use the mouse wheel so i give him points for thinking outside the box

@Smartguy
I was thinking B but it only draws lines and you can't change the colour (beyond brightness). I dropped it to a C+ because although what is there is impressive and shows ingenuity, there's not much to go on.
It was only for fun, don't put on your CV "OBese87 gave me a C+ for my work." lol
Put "That1Smartguy gave me a B for my work." sounds better lol

As much as it was a joke at first, it might make a good project, though it may be a bit extreme for us. Hmmm, depending on where we get with out current one, I might file this idea away in case we are ever ready to do it.

anyway

@bobbyd
Good program, sorry it took me a while to respond. I would agree with the ratings given so far. That being said, Welcome to the team!
If you haven't already check out TDK's tutorials and read through Obese's tutorial for writing good code

Then head over to the DarkNOOBS project 3 thread I will see if I can get you an assignment. It may take a me a while to get back (I have some plans today) so just be patient. Please don't disappear, even if you are still following the thread, because I will assume you aren't interested if a job does come up.

I feel a bit embarressed though because I never completed it.

We have had several people who join, then make a single post, usually in the middle of some discussion. Rather than jumping in (or throwing out feedback or something), they sit on the side lines and essentially disappear (sometimes this happens even when they get a job assignment, but that I am sure would happen anyway).

This is a great idea!!!!! I would love to join the only problem is that.... well.. I don't own DarkBASIC at the moment. If it is possible I will join when I get it but that might be a few months yet. Anyway... yeah so expect me to be part of the team in a few months. If it's alright with you of course.

Sorry acp, you were on thread moderation so your post didn't show up (I didn't check because it said I was the last one to post).

Anyway, It would be cool to have you once you have DarkBASIC. Until then you could follow our projects and give input.

@Team
Alright guys, we have officially SCRAPPED Project 3.

Here are some of the things we learned for the future:
1). Don't bite off more than you can chew (this includes expanding bites). The project SEEMED simple, but we went into it without ANY experience that would really prepare us for it (going from fuirous pickaxe and tower defense doesn't make us able to create a full game of that magnitude, even watered down).

2). Long projects DON'T work. We always lose interest as a team, so lets keep the projects simpler, something that can be done in a month or so tops.

3). As much as several of us with projects under our belts would like to, we cannot advance with each project. This is darkNOOBS, and we must keep the projects within that spectrum.

4). As a rule of thumb: If the project requires a map maker that requires a team to build, it is too complicated.

On the positive note, I like to think we got a good intro to memblocks and similar off limits stuff in there, not to mention we started to get a good idea about layers and using them.

so do we have a plan for a new game?

Ill just kinda throw out ideas as I think of em

idea 1) improved Brick Break (not the guy on this forum) style game, start off simple with the basic game, then throw in powerups, curved paddle, Custom level maker (maybe), etc

see simple concept, lots of room for improvement

Hmmm brick break could be fun.

We could also look into card games as well. There is a lot that can be learned from that, from file loading (for card information), to arrays, to images etc. And it keeps it (relatively) simple. Checking for hands though may become a problem (maybe we should just count the wOrds per minute that the user types )

Yeah guys, everyone just throw out some ideas here, way to start it off smart guy.

Also if anyone wants to throw something else we learned into the discussion so that we can, well, discuss it, go ahead, I am not omniscient (all knowing).

@Brick

Did you ever officially join? We would be glad to have you, just make a simple paint program as an entrance program to showcase your current level of programming, so that we can see where you are.

If you did I am sorry.

@Team:
I may not participate in the next project, as I want to see if, with this experience, I will finally be able to START a project and FINISH it as well. Depends on timing though.

yeah, I have a lot of work already done on that poker game so if we did that I could help, really the only thing I need for it is an AI for the computers

so idea 2) is poker game (mine is texas hold 'em)

idea 3) bejeweled remake, again simple but room for improvement

I know I am not part of DarkNOOBS but something I would really love to see is a Space Invaders remake. That was an all time classic and it would be great to have an improved version of that made. Like the Brick Break idea you could just add power-ups and other special features to the original game. You can do that project right now I suppose but if you do decide it would be a good idea then I might want you guys to possibly wait until I am part of the team so I can help. We could also add custom enemies if we felt so inclined.(I am using WE in case you do decide to eventually do it but wait for me. ) I think that it would just be a really fun project and it would be fairly simple. Of course if you guys want to make it now, it is an open option so do whatever with the idea. I would really like you guys to respond and say what you think of this idea.

ok. space invaders was just an idea like i said before. i do have another idea for you guys. What would you say to making a little minigolf game. I don't know how hard it would be to make or even what kind of features you would want to put in it but it seems like it could be fun. of course if you guys want to a poker game isn't too bad. Tell me what you think about the minigolf idea.

Edit - Noob status on these forums has been removed from me!!!!! Now I can respond a LOT quicker.

yeah i was actually thinking 2D with my suggestion but we could always make it 3D if we feel like it. I just think 2D could be a little easier. I really want to make some cool features in it though. Really vary it from your average minigolf game. Thia could possibly include power-ups and special obstacles. I don't know the skill set or amount of people working with DarkNOOBS at the current moment but I am sure something could be managed. If you guys would like to do some kind of card game first then that is cool. Once again this is one of those projects that I wouldn't mind participating in if you would be willing to put it off probably until next year. That does not mean you have to do so but if there are other things you would like to do first then you might as well do them and put this off for a while.

Im fine with mini-golf, or brick break (I kinda want the poker game to my own solo project)

the mini-golf would do well because the basic idea is pretty simple, but once we get that there is MUCH room for expansion

yeah that is true. that is another reason to possibly put it off for a while yet. if we do it now we will be a lot more limited in the features we have the skills to include and I won't be able to participate whereas if we postpone it until I can get my hands on DarkBASIC you will all be more experienced. I will be getting DB late this year just so you know. I will be more experienced too considering the fact that I will be learning as much BASIC as possible to prepare for DB. I am fairly sure that most things are about the same if not completely.

Edit - I did not read your guys' latest posts before I posted this. I guess you guys could just make a basic version and then expand but I really want to participate on this one.

Ummm, no offense, but as far as I am concerned everyone here is a noob. I still think of myself as a noob in a lot of ways and I have been programming for over 6 years! So, sorry but you are a noob. Welcome, you are no longer alone

Just taking some time off. Depending on when you guys begin the next project, I may jump in and help out, though I don't want to be manager again. It would be nice to see how someone else does it. Learn from observation type thing. Also, like I said, I kinda want to try to actually make a small game from conception to completion on my own. I never have really finished any program on my own and I think it would be a good time to do so.
