Just to try and help some people, you can get a computer for like 1292$ if you have the vista OS on a cd and a monitor. Because thats what I'm doing, and I'm getting:
CPU - AMD Athlon 64 x2 5600+
GPU - NVidia Geforce 8800 GTX
and 1GB of RAM. You can find cheap computers. I suggest looking around:
http://www.buyxg.com
or
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com

Those are the cheapest site I can find(if you know of any others inform me). Hope that helps with the whole "can't buy fpsc x10 unless I spend 4000 $" thing.

my advice, don't go 8500. They are not meant for gaming. Chances are,you will not be able to run games that well on them. I'd say the lowest you should go is an 8600gts xfx extreme edition or xXx edition. Thats just my opinion from my month or two of research on these cards.

will this be powerfull enough that when you open a door to a flooding room, water will pour out of it? or will we open doors to be greeted by a brick of water being held back by an invisible wall :/

Or, can you only make it so the water is at the same level throught the game?

The water appears to be the same level throughout the entire game
*Slayer_2
P.S. even if it isn't you still won't be able to have a good looking open the door to see water poring in effect. What normal door is water proof that well anyhow?

This was answered and discussed in one of the first pages, as well as in many other FPSCX10 threads. The water is just one flat "level", kinda like a plate that goes through the whole level.

You can change this level to what ever you want, event make it to change (rise/decrease) while in game, and change some graphical features of water as well. If player or object is under this "plate", the water physics activate (floating, swimming, some visual effects and other pre-set options). Other objects are directly effected by the water level when touched by it.

I don't think we'll be seeing water like you descriped for a long time, since it would require tons of different things to be calculated, created and edited in real time. Dunno if we even have technology to emulate something that complicated yet.

Well technically you could create your own shader and create some water physics with the use of Geometry Shaders. You may have a hard time doing it,but I'm sure its possible, one way or another.

Edit - Hah,a good place to start with that would be the NVidia Cascades demo(I think thats it). That demo lets you create water falls where ever you want on the object geometry, and the water will react to it and flow realistically through the object geometry.

Yeah, but that is meant as a tech demo, probably not suited well for video games, where there's a hundred other computationally intensive things going on at the same time.

I think the current implementation is more than good enough, anything more would take away from the "ease of use/one size fits all" aspect of FPSC. I think of the water level as "sea level", and build my level around that, where certain parts are submerged and other above "sea level".

Yeah the 8800GTS is a great card, I have the 640mb version. I would recommend though, buying the card that has the most memory you can afford.

The reason X10 and newer games look so great is because of shaders. And more shaders = more textures = more video memory needed.

I think there should be a waterfall type thingie...because I want to make a sewer level and have the waste flowing from pipes in the wall into a stream in the center of the sewer line....that would be cool.

NOOOOOO! So you mean I basicly HAVE to buy the 640 MB 8800 if I want it to run good? I was going to get the 512 MB for like $200 less

Nah I wasn't trying to imply that at all. 512mb is still a heck of a lot of video memory! I'm just saying that even if it means spending an extra 50-75 bucks or so, it's probably worthwhile to get a card with the most memory you can. And like any type of computer part, more expensive=better performance.

he is right :/ im gunna get the 8800 320mb, its still mighty powerfull (even the 256 if it even does that) and it will run x10.

I didnt think i would find one as cheap as that tbh :/ so yeh get the one i put a link up too, thats cheap and good.

if i had more money i would go for the 640

Would fpscx10 run better on a single or dual core processor? apparently according to wikipedia sometimes games etc can run slower on dual cores as it only uses one of the processors at a time or something :/ anyways im still new to this.

I'd say it would work better on dual, as should most games and programs. Multi-core processors "share" the running tasks between the cores, allowing one to work on certain task(s) and other one(s) on another, or join powers to run certain task better.

There's already some quad-core systems available, and I'm pretty sure they're going to multiply in the future. Next things you need to pay attention are the graphics card and RAM.

depends whats on it

...

nothing really to do with your HDD, or at least, not that important, unless you plan on building 1,500 games.

as for graphics cards more memory doesn't necessarily always mean its better, for instance if the card can process something faster it may not need to use so much memory at one time, i really don't want to go and spend £400 for a 8800 gtx but am thinking about a BFG 8600 GT overclocked, which isn't too shabby. might try and throw in a couple more bucks just to get the 320mb 8800 GTS though

meanwhile, ATI is just biding its time, releasing just one good, yet expensive dx10 card...*sigh*

Again, I apologize for the boring room, but here is a "stage 5" zombie, in it's most deteriorated form. It really shows how normal mapping can define gooey organic forms.

The maggots are setting in!

Love it bond That normal mapping is amazing! Is any of that slightly modeled, or does it use exactly the same mesh as the normal tubby guy?

Thanks! The in-game model is exactly the same as the others, the high poly model from which the normal map was generated is very different, obviously.

I'll ask Rick about making a vid, but it'd probably be best to wait until he can show one himself, showing off other stuff like allies and AI.

Is X10 worth buying a new computer for? Well the answer for me is a resounding "Hell yes!". No one buys a new computer to brag about how fast they can run Office 2007. It's all about the fun stuff.

Let's face it, FPSC is a product that has absolutely no equal right now, especially X10. What other software out there let's me import my own creations and have them look this good, and let me interact with them immediately without a single line of code? There isn't anything else.

So yes, it's worth it. I just wish there would have been something like FPSC when I was a kid. Well, I guess I'm still a kid, a 31 year old kid.

If you say without breaching your contract, are the allies any good or are the complete idiots? Allies are the most appealing thing to me in FPSC X10,

P.S. You are right though, it takes me like one minute to make a fully textured box or barrel FPSC is simple in every way, even when making custom content

Since rick hasn't replied to like the 6 people or so who have asked and plus he has not said ANYTHING about it, sadily I doubt it. . People I know are probly thinking that I care to much about multiplayer, but multiplayer is a really big thing in games.
