Well first you have to be really small, and have really big ears that aren't attached to your body. I think TheComet can fill you in on the rest.

Being half-deaf sucks.

I'm permanently half-deaf. My right ear is no good. Sometimes when I get a severe cold my left ear plugs up similarly to what you've described (I sleep on my left side for quiet the only perk of having 1 non-functional ear: a built in ear plug. Of course it all drains that way with a cold ) and I experience temporary near deafness. It's quite unsettling. I haven't had too many issues operating with one ear minus complete incompetence at marco polo.

I've always had problems with my ears and often end up partially deaf for a period of time. I used to get a lot of ear infections as a kid too, they're no fun. So the partial deafness happened before I started listening to lots of loud music and going to gigs & festivals. But colds have the same effect as swissolo, it is most irritating, especially when you work in a call centre.

I frequently get blocked ears when I go swimming. One or both ears stays blocked for days unless I pull down on my earlobe, and that gets annoying pretty quickly. I've tried warm oil and cotton wool, ear drops and sleeping with the blocked ear downwards but nothing helps except waiting for days. Once it was so blocked that I had to go to the doctor to have it squirted out with a plunger. That was unpleasant.

We finally got our Suzuki DS80 back from the mechanic the day before yesterday, which brings us up to 4 whole working bikes! It did cost a ridiculous $900 to get the Suzuki going again, though. No idea how Mum and Dad managed to pay for that, or why they agreed to do it. Sometimes they spoil us rotten Thankfully the mechanic did a wonderful job on it - shiny new kickstart and spline, cleaned and polished, the clutch doesn't slip constantly any more and it just starts and idles first kick, even on a cold day. Here's what we have:

- Suzuki DS80 (~1989, 2-stroke, minuscule)
- Atomik 125cc (~2007, 4-stroke, Chinese)
- Honda CT200 Ag (~1997, 4-stroke, centrifugal clutch)
- Kawasaki KLR250 (~1992, 4-stroke, shockies mostly useless)

It's great fun riding together on the fire trails up behind our property.

I saw the specialist today and had a hearing exam to tell me that my hearing is reduced (no kidding), and that my left ear is worse than my right (no kidding). He told me if it will usually improve on its own but if it doesn't improve in 5 weeks he can cut a hole in my eardrum and insert a grommet, which should give me full hearing back. But today I've been hearing noises and the worst ear has been blocking/unblocking, so I think the fluid is starting to drain. I've had an URI recently so perhaps it caused inflammation of the eustachian tube, which would have caused the blockage and subsequent otitis.

Something interesting is that the frequency response of my left ear is completely not what it should be, receiving different levels at different frequencies. So maybe I could EQ one ear when wearing headphones and everything will sound better?

That sounds pretty crappy. Dysfunctional eustachian tube?

I can imagine. I guess you have to adjust the left/right balance on the headset.

Bizarre, that's an ear canal problem rather than a middle-ear problem though. Sometimes when I go swimming (I say go as if the 20 metre walk from the front door is a day out ) I get water in my ears, but violently shaking my head to one side usually fixes it.

This has been an oddly long week for me. I had to work a long day on Tuesday and tonight I'm working until midnight, only to come home and have to be back to work by 10am tomorrow morning. No evening for me, unless I want no sleep

I just wish they would hire more people so I wouldn't have to close and be there early again. I know, I'm picky and selfish that way.

I explode. No idea really, it's not recommended that you put your head under water once while you've got the hole in your eardrum, so I assume that's so that water doesn't get in...

FINALLY managed to flash new firmware onto the Atmega16u2 chip of my Arduino Uno to enable DFU mode using another Uno. That was excessively difficult - not because it was inherently hard but because the information on the internet was spread far and wide.

Now to get the IR receiver working with the HID firmware to allow remote keyboard input for media centre control!

Of all of the major online video streamers, I think Vimeo's is the best. It just works, unlike every other player out there. I can load a video, move the cursor anywhere along the loaded area, and it doesn't start reloading! What a marvel! Heck, I can even have the whole thing loaded, put my computer back to sleep, wake it up, and the video plays perfectly fine from RAM without an internet connection. That's impossible with YouTube.

Vimeo isn't meant to be anything like YouTube; it's considered a more professional platform for people to upload their short films to, or music videos, or anything they want true feedback on. It does have much better compression technologies than YouTube and doesn't degrade the quality of the video uploaded as long as you exported it with their guidelines in mind.

YouTube is meant for any kind of video, and not many people can manage to get the proper feedback they crave, which is what drives many to Vimeo in the first place. That's what drove me over there, anyway.

It might be more professional for the uploader, but for the watcher it's very limited.

It's seriously slow (mostly in load times but also in responsiveness). It's buggy (will frequently get stuck on one resolution, and whilst in fullscreen if the mouse isn't at the very edge of the screen the playback bar and buttons will randomly flicker on and off). It's limited (you get a very generic choice of SD or HD - with no indication of what resolution is actually being used - a volume slider and the share, like and watch later buttons). It doesn't even have a mute button.

Interesting. If I have any YouTube video loaded (which never actually happens, it waits for me to play the video to load as it plays, instead of Vimeo loading the whole thing ASAP) and I move the cursor anywhere, it (I presume) finds the most optimal quality for the internet speed at that moment, and begins reloading from there. Incredibly annoying when that creates about a 15 second wait after I move the cursor each time. If I do it a few times in one video, the whole thing stops working. Sometimes it just stops loading, sometimes it fully crashes. YouTube has been this way for me for at least two years.

Wow. I cannot believe I just did that. I had a really long post written here, then decided to refresh the page to check for new posts so copied the entire post and hit refresh.... and started copying text from the new post. Idiot, idiot, idiot. *facedesk* That's very frustrating. Now I'm going to go find a clipboard history program so that can never happen again. And also try to remember what I had written here and recreate it.

Quote: "Bought GTA V for PC last night. It blows console versions out of the water!"

This was one of the long bits of the post that got lost. The gist of it was that my brother and I never bought GTA V on consoles and were confident it would be released on PC even though it wasn't announced for a year. As soon as it was available we preordered it (one boxed copy and one code - 60GB is a helluva lot to download, so the 7 dual-layer DVDs helped). It looks spectacular (waaaay better than GTA IV) and runs incredibly well (again, tonnes better than GTA IV).

Oh, and thank GOODNESS GFWL crashed and burned and R* used Social Club instead! GFWL was utter and complete CRAP and Social Club does a really good job!

Quote: "Anybody play GTA online at all? Would be fun to get into some shenanigans with somebody!"

Yeah definitely, but I'm not sure if we could play together very well with the electricities having to go all the way to the other side of the world. Oh wait they use fiberoptics... well, the photons having the go all the way to the other side of the world. I believe Mum and Dad are going out this afternoon so we can definitely try. If you're still awake, of course - didn't think of that. What timezone are you? We're GMT+10. Or UTC, whatever they call it now. If you're somewhere around Austin, it'll be about 10:30pm for you when we can play, going by my secondary Windows clocks. Yeah, sometimes I like to know what time it is in Wales and Texas. Oh yeah, I meant Austin, Texas. I always forget you Americans list the town AND the state. In Australia we'd never say Melbourne, Victoria or Sydney, New South Wales. It's almost always just Melbourne or Sydney or Brisbane or Perth or whatever.

Quote: "I assume the latest thing is the paid mods feature that they added to steam workshop a few days ago"

The reaction was apparently swift and overwhelmingly negative about the whole paid mods thing, so Valve is removing it.

Also, apparently when Valve "pisses off the internet" (paraphrased quote from Gaben) it costs them about $1m in email service alone (i.e. having to respond to the thousands upon thousands of emails).
