Sounds like a plan Clonkex try two perspectives though, user based and dev based maybe? User regarding aesthetics, controls, music, level design... dev wise areas for improvement or enhancement, methods of certain features [How they may have created xyz feature/scene]... etc...

Regarding Two GPU's VS. One GPU, it costs you more in the long run having two versus one, as you effectively are using two lower optimised cards sucking higher Wattages compared to a single optimised card with the brute force behind it... at least this is my perspective... I always look at the long run costs not the up front costs... Also I do believe the game has to support the feature as well to fully benefit from the performance, but it has been a while since I last looked into SLI......

Your argument may be, OH I live at home, bla bla bla... you will eventually move out and trust me, nothing stings more than high utility bills... [Well it is after rent/mortgage and groceries the highest cost to your wallet] also, you should be concerned about what your usage is doing to your electricity bills even if living at home... shame on you

Also be very sure to compare cards...

Like, do you really need a 2GB GPU at a slightly higher cost, when all you will be playing is DOTA... or Minecraft... also note the memory types, DDR3 VS. DDR5 also note the memory speeds, ~1GHZ VS. ~5GHZ I am almost certain a ~5GHZ DDR5 based GPU will have more FPS than a 2GB DDR3 ~1GHZ GPU...

So many darn variables I do not claim to know everything about GPU's but some things are logical

I am expecting this little toy to arrive later today...

N730K-1GD5LP/OC

It has enough power [384 cores] so something higher was really not that much a requirement... the wattage is quite satisfactory too as it will sit in a system that is on 24/7

DX12 API [Feature level 11_0]
OpenGL 4.4
3 Active displays or a 4K display at umm 24Hz
Adaptive VSync...
And a stated 49Watt~ peak consumption...

And decent cooling and low profile too... [Albeit the case is a beast, they just did not have anything bigger ] not fussed about PCIE3.0 as this is siting in an older mobo... if I were to upgrade the board I would also get a new GPU to match the release time of the board... in other words another decent GPU at that time... but I am more interested in getting a decent Intel Iris class GPU [On Chip]... and stick liquid cooling on the sucker... thus saving me the added power cost of an add-in card...

OKOK, I did a lot of garden work last night and it has my adrenaline pumping... :/ could not sleep lol

Good idea on the multiple perspectives, but I'm not sure whether I could manage to fit in chat about technical aspects of the game's development without totally boring everyone It's definitely an interesting idea, though, so have a think about it

Of course, of course We were rather tired when we made the last video, hence the somewhat unexciting dialogue. We'll make sure we're wide awake and enthusiastic when we record the next video tomorrow

@MrValentine:

I thought it had been proven to you that a high-wattage computer barely adds any cost to electricity bills, like it's literally only a few extra cents a month.... at least I remember somebody doing the math and showing that.

The R9 Nano is rated at 175W TDP, so it's much more efficient than my R9 280X at the moment, and more efficient than the GTX 980ti.

Also, if there existed a ~5GHz GPU out there for gaming, we'd probably have holodecks at the moment. Most GPUs are still in the 950MHz - 1.1GHz range, even overclocked!

Then somebody did the maths wrong.

If we assume 500W computer. 15p per Kwh. Run the PC for 8 hours a day. So this PC uses 4KWh a day. 4*0.15 = 60p per day. Multiply that by 30 days, £18.

I'd say that's quite expensive.

I worded that very incorrectly.

I meant that a high-powered GPU (not computer, of course the WHOLE computer will add cost to your bills) doesn't add as much extra expenses as you would think.

Indicium, we'll basically use your example. Let's say you have a 1000W computer, whose components don't even use all 1000W at any given time. Would a GPU rated at 250W TDP still add much more of an extra cost over, say, a GPU that is rated at 200W? It would be a difference, sure, but it would only add up to a few extra bucks a month, because you're still not even using your full strength in your system.

That is what I meant, when I said someone did the math earlier (I believe in this thread) to show that it really doesn't add up to as much as one might think! If you're not using your full power in your system to begin with, then why would you be so worried about a 200W TDP GPU over a 175W TDP GPU?

If you really can't afford to pay a couple extra dollars per month for a better GPU, then maybe you shouldn't have bought it in the first place.

Or shut your lights off more often to make up for it, unplug your cell phone chargers too 'cause those suck up a lot of extra power when you leave them plugged in. But don't sacrifice a better GPU just because it might add a few extra bucks to your bills.

Ah okay. I see your point. I think it kind of does matter when it comes to CPUs where you have AMD's CPUs drawing 200+W, compared to my Intel 4690k which only draws 86W. (Maybe that's not correct, I know TDP isn't power draw, but I don't know how to find the power draw).

Everything adds up.

All good points, AMD cpus do indeed eat a lot of power. I have one in my system and although I love it, I probably will go with Intel when I build my next computer (or revamp this one, since the case is so excellent!).

I just saw this interesting article, apparently the Fury X is NOT 11.55" in length, it's only 7.5"! So the previous article I read was highly misinformed on the actual size. I could EASILY fit the Fury X in my system, so that is what I'm going to save up for.

Also, more benchmarks are leaking, and continue to indicate it hands the 980's ass to itself on a silver platter, and is just slightly better optimized than the 980ti.

If this is indeed the case, and it's a great card and stable and reviews rave about it, it will be mine by the end of the year!

Are you referring to memory clockrate or the actual GPU clock rate here?

Quote: "N730K-1GD5LP/OC"

Pretty wimpy card. 1 GB of GDDR5 VRAM is maybe enough for 4K for just desktop usage, but nowhere near enough if you need other graphics rendering on top of it. Also, 64-bit memory bus is tiny! Even with compression, that's tiny. According to Nvidia's site, that 730 variant is only suppposed to pull 25 watts(though it's not clear if that's TDP, which is not power draw, or actual power draw).

Overall, a decent casual gamer/workstation card. Not necessarily suited for gaming though.

Exchanged it for N740-2GD5 as the card received was a little... defective...

Does nobody read these days? I might add though, where I said types I meant the speeds...

I can assure you the 384 cores pack a punch for gaming!

Playing all games in 1080p and almost all with 16xAA and 4096x4096 textures [where available like FFXIII]... with frame rates depending on the game around 20-60 [I always use VSYNC... but enabled adaptive VSYNC non-30hz cap]

Also I choose low-mid range GPU's as I am not a heavy gamer [Not interested in the latest 'hype' titles [But this can run GTAV so meh ], most of my games are the likes of FFVII, GTA4, era based...] also I am developing games that can be played on as many low end systems as possible... did I mention I am not so heavy into playing games?

Secretary of Forum Activity it shall be then!

For the last few days I have been plagued with internet connectivity issues. As far as I can tell, it's because our modem keeps cycling itself, because it thinks it's not getting a signal. It happens sporadically, which means gaming online, for the moment, is out of the question until I get it sorted.

It's like the modem literally forgets it's receiving a signal, so it reboots itself to look for it again. Sometimes it gets stuck in this loop and will keep resetting itself, until I go and unplug every single cable from it, leave it alone for a full sixty seconds, and then plug everything back in. From there, it can work great for up to 24 hours at a time, until it resets itself again.

What's weird is that when it resets itself our internet is back up within ninety seconds, unless it gets stuck in that loop. Could my modem be dying perhaps?

If you think that's trolling, I shudder to think of how you'll react to some of the things on the Internet. I simply find your style of writing to be hard to read as you insist on using ellipsis instead of proper punctuation to delimit your sentences/thoughts.

As for how I thought your sentence was ambiguous, you switched where the GHz was located when describing the second GPU. For the first GPU in your comparison, you described it as such: "~5GHZ DDR5 based GPU".
The second GPU was described in this way: "2GB DDR3 ~1GHZ GPU".

The first way is definitely talking about the memory clockrate.
The second way normally describes the clockrate on the GPU card itself, rather than the memory.
Because of this, I was confused as to which you were actually comparing. And I simply asked for you to clarify it.

Then you called me a troll and implied I couldn't read.

You guys know what an amazingly funny show is? And one that is on Netflix?

"The Dick Van Dyke" show. It has slapstick comedy that's just so hilarious!

I highly recommend you all watch season 1, episode 16, "Who owes who what?", because it's so freakin' hysterical.

Gosh I love old TV shows, it really was a much different era in those days!

In fact I'm going to watch another episode while I go to bed (I'm weird, I like to have soft TV playing in the background while falling asleep), so goodnight forum world!

Ah I see, I only misplaced the ~1GHZ that is all... the leading wording towards it kind of defined the topic... But I see why you were confused...

Was not referring to you just in general but let us drop the slight confusion because on balance, you did not point out which part you were referring to

Just bought Doom 3 (not the BFG edition), Doom 3 ROE and Dishonored on Steam today because of the ridiculous Summer Sales (or Winter Sales if you're in the Southern Hemisphere ). I love Doom 3 and if I can find my old savegames I'll actually finish it once and for all... and then of course play Dishonored because my brother insists it's the best game ever made

Let's have a competition thread (to induce forum activity and awesomeness), shall we? What kind of competition would it be? Some random programming thing, or maybe a desktop background contest (as an example)?

Hmm, perhaps I should do some research and come up with some forum activity statistics, and then use those to help me in my forum activity secretarial duties. Can I appoint someone else to write a program for me that would gather statistics? Randomness seems a fine candidate, with his Posting Competition counting program. Yodaman Jer, if you nominated Randomness 128 to enter some sort of programming job in your cabinet, he'd have even more to procrastinate on, which would be perfect!

Ooh I'd love that! I really like making awesome desktop backgrounds, though I haven't done it often

Our latest Flash Buddies video is up (as Mr. V has already discovered )!

We're playing Sauerbraten, an open-source and totally free twitch shooter that's been around for years and years and we love it

Something that's annoying is the way the embedded video cuts of part of the thumbnails, so the text gets cut off. Maybe we'll leave a title-safe area for the next thumbnails... but then they don't look as good when they're not being cut off

Both sound good, a programming competition would perhaps bring in more people from the AppGameKit board (there are a LOT of people over there!), but a desktop background competition could be interesting as well!

I, myself, vote for both.

How long should the competitions last? And what will be the goals?

Perhaps the desktop background winner could win a 2D artist forum badge?

And they would have to conform to certain rules, like...

- All background must be made multi-resolution (up to 4K if doable, if not just 1440p perhaps)
- They must fit as many aspect ratios as possible (16:10, 16:9, 4:3, etc.,.)
- No use of copyrighted materials
- Any application may be used to create assets

And the programming competition, well, what should that be?

Another idea from ages ago that people had was to hold NaGaCreMo-X2, basically it would be regular NaGaCreMo but in the summer, when people seem to have more time since they don't have school going on. I should like to suggest that the programming competition be "NaGaCreMo - Summer Edition", perhaps announcing it in the July Newsletter so that it can go through the month of August? What do you guys think?

I think it would really help to stimulate activity, and I think a thread about should be created in Geek Culture, with a link to the NaGaCreMo board itself so that people know to post their WIP threads in there. I really think it could work!

Ditched Charter Cable and internet yesterday to replace it with AT&T U-verse.

I had been a paying Charter customer since June of 2010, and they were a horrible service. I wanted to switch to U-verse ages ago but never could until recently.

Not even a full 24 hours later, and U-verse is so much better than any other cable company. Sure, it will cost more than Charter did once all the promos run out by next June, but it's such a better value, much better customer service, and the amount of channels you get is insane.

Plus having a wireless TV receiver means I can place my "cable box" anywhere in my room without having to worry about running those awful coaxial cables! Hahaha!

I now have my wireless TV receiver on my desk, plugged into my monitor via HDMI. So whenever I feel like watching TV, all I have to do is switch the input on my monitor and there we go! It's marvelous!

I even got it to play the sound through my computer speakers' auxiliary input, by running a stereo cable from the output on the back of the monitor to the auxiliary input on the control hub of my speakers. This also means I could set up my PS3 this way, so that I can finally play some of my old games!

Man, I love technology

Blarg, so I need to find some proof I wasn't in Spain on the 14th of April in order to contest a speeding ticket. So annoying, my car was absolutely full of (supermarket) receipts until a few weeks ago when I took it into the garage. I'm bound to have had something from that day but I threw it all away.

By the wording previously it seemed your garage did the trip to Spain with your car... So I figured you were in London...

Either that or someone cloned your plates... So you need them to give you visual evidence that it was you and your car... Otherwise they have a no contest grounds against you... By that I mean you can get them to write off the ticket plain and simple...

Either go see your local citizen advice centre in town or consult a solicitor over this... They should have a meeting discussing this for free with you... And tell you your options...

N.B.
This is simply my opinion and not legal advice from me just what I know at the moment over this sort of issue...

Ah sorry, I perhaps worded that a little badly.

Quote: "Either that or someone cloned your plates... So you need them to give you visual evidence that it was you and your car... Otherwise they have a no contest grounds against you... By that I mean you can get them to write off the ticket plain and simple..."

Yeah, apparently (at least in some places) the speed camera records a picture of the vehicle, so it can be contested. I'm going to send a picture of the car, a copy of the identification papers, and copy of a bank statement that shows I went to a supermarket here in France that day. Unfortunately it was my mum's bank card and not mine (since I take her shopping), so I don't know if that itself will suffice.

I spoke to a lady at the police station today and she told me I should write to them to contest it, and provide proof such as receipts from that day if possible. If only I hadn't thrown away the 48574 billion receipts that were in my car the day before I took it in to the garage. Anyway, she suggested the problem may be that the camera got one of the numbers on the plate backwards and so picked up my number, instead of the person with a very similar plate. Or, it could be a case of cloned plates. We'll see. Either way I'm not paying €100 for someone else's mistake. Or maybe the law will require that I do due to the way speed cameras work. Grr. Whatever happened to "innocent until proven guilty".

Thanks.

Had the same problem once... London TFL sent me a fine for illegally parking in a red bus lane...

If they bothered checking the licence against the image they had they would see that I did not own a Mercedes Sprinter van lol

EDIT

And they would see that the plates were identified wrongly...

Why are some people so bad at English?

Another way of phrasing this is "all things that are similar have different ancestors". Obviously what they mean is "not all similar things have the same ancestor", but people fail at English. It amazes me how far these things spread. I don't got no idea how it happens.

Phew, back to the forums! Seems activity has dropped a fair bit here. Secretary of Forum Activity to the rescue!

Quote: "How long should the competitions last? And what will be the goals?"
I think the competitions should last a week or two, but that of course is a very open aspect of the competitions. As for goals, that is also pretty open!

Quote: "Perhaps the desktop background winner could win a 2D artist forum badge?"
This is a great idea! Giving some sort of incentive like that would convince more people to partake in the competition.

Quote: "- All background must be made multi-resolution (up to 4K if doable, if not just 1440p perhaps)
- They must fit as many aspect ratios as possible (16:10, 16:9, 4:3, etc.,.)
- No use of copyrighted materials
- Any application may be used to create assets"
These all sound good. So perhaps the competition could be to create a good TGC themed background? That would invoke a forum spirit about the competition.

Quote: "And the programming competition, well, what should that be?"
Not sure. I don't program enough these days to be of much good coming up with ideas for programming competitions. Years back, I started a Hello World competition in which people had to create the most creative hello world program possible. That seemed to work pretty well, if I recall.

Quote: "I should like to suggest that the programming competition be "NaGaCreMo - Summer Edition", perhaps announcing it in the July Newsletter so that it can go through the month of August?"
This sounds like a great idea! How about we have this be the programming competition?

Quote: "Shouldn't DJD have a community leader badge?

However, I would like to pass the motion that DJD64 receive such a badge for his commitment to this community, and his undying love for this forum in general!"
Well shucks, thanks guys. I definitely wouldn't mind holding a Community Leader badge if you guys think I should.

EDIT Oh sweet, I have one. That's awesome; I wasn't expecting one, nor do I feel like I have done enough to have earned one. I am honored! Thanks guys.
