The zip file doesn't work. I tried it in Winzip 8, the builtin Windows XP zip extractor, and WinRAR and all of them said it was corrupted (and yes I did try downloading it more than once).

EDIT: After trying the game I found a couple issues. First, the mouse pointer stays in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Second, the game's actually pretty hard because it's so easy to fall off the edges of islands and die. Thirdly, when you switch characters it takes a couple seconds to readjust the camera which can lead to tragety when you change characters and move too quickly.

Quote: "If the character models were spiced up abit (Some kinda bubble shader would own) and add more detail into the texture, you could sell it if you wanted. (Levels look good, but texture looks too flat and generic. I think you can achieve better results while still upholding the cartoonish look)"

That's a fair enough comment - I don't really understand shaders though, so it'd be great if you could email me (see below) and point me in the right direction? (I've read that Shader Thread and I don't understand it at all)

@ Mike S
Thanks! I think I probably will aim to sell it... if, when it's done, it ain't quite commercial quality, then at least I'll have a great freeware game for my site

Quote: "First, the mouse pointer stays in the bottom right hand corner of the screen."

The mouse pointer is meant to stay there because it's not needed. Could you see the mouse pointer? Hide mouse does not work so that's the only thing I could think of.

Quote: "Second, the game's actually pretty hard because it's so easy to fall off the edges of islands and die."

No offence, but, the islands are pretty big - that's your playing to be honest.

Quote: "Thirdly, when you switch characters it takes a couple seconds to readjust the camera which can lead to tragety when you change characters and move too quickly."

Right, I've just added an option to speed up camera swivel in my version - it'll be in the next update

Comments? Bugs?

Dumbo and Cool - back on track! 2 level demo and screens in WIP board, 5mb! Go on... have a look.

Yeah, I could see it. Why can't you use hide mouse?

Quote: "No offence, but, the islands are pretty big - that's your playing to be honest."

Yes, but misjudging the gap between two islands towards the end of a level repeatedly makes the game pretty agravating since you have to start the whole level over again. How about a camera option to see the world from a top down persepctive to help minimize this problem?

Also, I think you should put the controls and stuff in-game (like have them displayed when you hit F1) and make the two characters look more unique from one another so that it's easier to tell them apart and it'll just look better because you'll have two distinct characters and not just two different colored blobs.

Mouse hiding error fixed.

Had a go at "bubble shaders" but found out my PC doesn't support shaders at all. Guess that's out of the question...

UPDATE!

I've been hard at work and have made some good progress and fixed almost every bug spotted and addressed every complaint I could.

PUZZLE MODE: Time attack levels as shown below with nice VR stuff happening all around and binary for rain

DUMBOW Alot of complaints about Dumbo's lack of gender indication. Sorted with a bow.

SPLIT SCREEN CAMERA A complaint that the split screen cameras were too tight was fixed with the camera being moved outwards and panned up.

DUMBO SWIMMING AND CONTROL SCREEN Dumbo's swimming animation has been fixed with a nice tilt and F1 now brings up context sensitive controls as shown.

MAP VIEW Right mouse button now brings up a birds eye view of the level - the coins still sparkle in this view, giving away there position

LEVEL 2 GRAPHICS New textures, lighting and some cool sign models with rotating sirens have been added to level 2 to polish it off.

On top of this, quicksave has been added - it saves every variable and upon your death reloads the game world instantly.
To prevent you quicksaving upon an inescapable death, if you die within 6 seconds of a quicksave, your quicksave point is automatically reset to the beginning of the level!

The player turn speed can now be altered in the options screen for user preference.

The mouse hiding bug has been fixed.

The crashing bug on level 2 has been fixed.

I had a go at shaders, but my PC does not have shader capab. so that is not going to happen.

Dumbo and Cool - 50% complete today!

This is looking fantastic Drew!

I love how you're adding VR style missions to this game. I always enjoy messing around in those kinds of missions in other games. Also glad to see the amount of polish you've added.

Keep up the good work!

Drew this is fantastic. I've probably still got the old version, but it seemed that the game ran pretty fast in split screen, but there was a definite, somewhat annoying, slowdown in single player. The split screen is really awesome, me and my little brother were having a ball.

Looks amazing there Drew. I do have a suggestion though about optimising. If you don't do it all ready, rather than using seperate plains for each particle in your effects, you should try using multiple limbs in one object, as I did some tests a while ago and it seems much faster.

hi, Drew.

man, you really know what you'r doing. this is one of the grooviest things i have seen. looks like your going to be doing this for a living to me. well done m8.

@benjamin

I'm getting the same problem with some of my code, sometimes it ends up running in the background and won't recover. the process is still showing up in task manager but it's not really running any more. i don't know if this is a compiler bug or what, but if you find a way to cure it, or you Drew, then please post the solution to the problem, thanks.

regards, geecee3.

Hi man just realised something that could really do with a tweak...the waterfall in the first level, compared to the quality of the rest of the level it just seemed a bit tacky...it needs some thickness to it...but the rainbow is a lovely touch !
Just my thoughts anyhoo

Rain effect!

50 plains with a rain image, falling around the camera. There are 10 splash plains. When a rain hits the ground at it's point, it calls a splash plain and tells it to scale and fade.

Same for snow btw - that "melts" if you watch it though, instead.

Baggers

I might look into that for you then when I'm not working on other stuff. ( Level 3 is a warzone and Level 4 is a traintop ride )

The warzone level is full of these orange guys, who incidentally are called Studes.

http://www.drewsgames.com/demo7.JPG

It is similar to WWII style battle grounds with mud, rain, barbed wire, bombing ranges, gun turrets and some great two player puzzles!

The next demo will be the same demo albeit with bug fixes.
For the afformented new levels you'll have to buy the full game

July 31st - guaranteed.

Just wondering, are you going to try and bump up the ai a bit or leaving it as standing objects? Just curious because my game is starting to head in this sort of direction also (but on a larger scale since I'll have a fair amount of time between high school and uni). Do you use a radius to check distance from the enemy or is there an inbuilt function, say field of view of an object, that is allowing you to do this much easier?

Graphically I'm quite impressed. Are you modelling and texturing your own objects or do you have an artist doing it for you? As for your physics, they seem well designed. Are you using a dll for this or are you coding old school? If you don't feel you need to answer these then don't bother, I don't want to be intrusive

The AI is being recoded right now, but I use a ray check to see if they are viewing you. I'll post it up along with some screens later.

I'm modelling and texturing everything bar characters. The physics are old school coded.

Thanks, more to come.

MMMM, awesome game. How much would this game be American? lol, I'll definetly buy it when you finish. I also really loved your teaser movie, it actually looked pro and just felt like it could be on tv even. You're doing a great job! Maybe one day I'll finish one of the many projects I've had into something great...

$9.99, American - ( that's £4.99 UK ) thanks for the kind feedback.

Right now I'm adding camp fires into level 3 and when you touch them your character catches fire. You can "put yourself out" by touching water.

I've also been thinking about adding in some stage bosses? Hmmm...

6 new screenshots!
Please note; level not completed and the blue box you see in some screenshots, pointing at the target, is done in Paint, to show what will be there when I do the model later.

One of Cool's puzzle levels, opposed to Dumbo's (below). Colours reflect them.

Dumbo puzzle level with new water.

Level 3, WWII themed one.

Level 3, again. To be honest though, the theme has drifted away from the WWII theme I wanted, but I like the blue and red the same.

Rainbow sun flare *and* Dumbo on fire! She caught fire from a camp fire as described in the previous post. You can put it out by jumping in water or let it go out in the rain after about half a minute, eating into health slowly along the way. If Cool catches alight, he can skate the flame off - the idea being that the wind blows it out.

Birds eye, level introduction view. Note the missile that has crashed and now smokes away

Well, enjoy all!
New demo coming soon, and more screenshots from the later levels, next month!

Looks great and I can't wait for the demo. A little question, where you have wholes in the floor, are you using multiple matrices or are you using matrix transparency? Or both?
