It is. Drew, have you updated the RAR file yet, or are you just making us stare curiously at the 3rd level?

When a new demo is out, which is still going to be July 31st I hope, it will probably be posted in program announcements with a link in this thread, as it will be a finished release.

The demo will be the same as the current demo, with new graphical improvements, options, audio, 3 'VR' levels and the game's pre-rendred introduction film.

It will not, however, include level 3; you'll have to buy the full thing to play level 3 onwards into the game, or to play all of the 'VR' levels. Sorry

And to that I remind you...

Quote: "A new one everyday!"

Gish is a 2D indie game, where you follow a ball of tar around doing stuff, with really good lighting and fluid effects. It's the only game I've ever bought off the internet, and I actually buy a lot of stuff from the internet. As has been cited already, http://www.gishgame.com

Q:
Quote: "Will he have that cool tar-like movement?"

A: I'm afraid not, I wouldn't know how to make him move like that, sorry.

Q:
Quote: "Drew, what exactly do you mean by 'VR levels'? "

A: By VR levels, I mean this kind of level -

There are 12 of these levels, all lasting between 30 seconds and a minute, but they even take me a couple of goes sometimes! I am seriously contemplating adding a high score (times) online feature where you can submit your times for the levels.

These 'VR' levels are intended to add longevity to the game because the main game only lasts 1-2 hours! You unlock this mode upon completion of the main, 'story' mode.

Oh, and for anyone interested, todays work:

I think I'm burning out with all this coding, so I thought today was a nice easy day, which I liked. Plus, I got to see Katie Holmes again!

The top priority at the moment is getting the demo ready. By doing this, it will force me to solve some of the main issues and get the introduction cinematics done, which I otherwise would put off. (Doing films is actually the biggest pain)

Oh wait, and one more thing - I found a brand new WMV codec that I can include with my installer, and it makes a 8 minute film, with 44KHZ sound and 320x240 resolution for under 4mb. That's less than 500k for every minute of (fairly) high resolution, CD quality (most important for voice acting) video!

Hey drew, (another question ) which WMP codec is it? (or is it 3rd-party).

I could definately do with that codec (as you know of my media-compressing porblems )

It just appeared on my Export list when I installed the 'Studio Version 9, Plus!' disk, I don't know it's name though, sorry. It might have been there from the regular Studio 9, but I only recently noticed it when looking for a setting with emphasis on audio.

If you have Pinnacle Studio 9, look into MAKE MOVIE > STREAMING > WINDOWS MEDIA > CUSTOM > Video for Broadband Pal (768kbps) >> 368x288, 44.1Khz

The codec itself that you need, seems to be the same as the regular WMV codec, so maybe I should've said I found a brand new 'WMV setting' in my previous post.

Hope that helps, and your questions are always welcome!

How much did you say you were charging again?

And though you have 10 minutes worth of audio, what do they say other than 'Get back here!','Hi Dumbo.', and 'Hi Cool!'?

They say a little more ingame than they do in the last demo; they make a variety of jumping sounds, ouch sounds, talk when in first person view, when they are bored and when they complete a level.

The game also has 4 films, which are all fully voice acted too;

> The introduction film

> A film at the beginning of the train level.

> A film at the end of the train level.

> The ending film.

@ PowerSoft,

That's not a bad idea, but I'm sure Mrs. Holmes and her lawyers have real things to do, like making movies and suing people respectively, than endorse a kid's game, even if they do get a free copy. I doubt Mrs. Holmes even plays games to be honest.

Besides, I'd be way to shy to send anything to Mrs. Holmes!

Nice idea, if only.

[edit] Let's say in theory, I sent off a letter to the her agent (I have the address after some surfing), what would I say?;

Quote: "Dear ________,
My name is Drew Cameron, and I am lead developer on a project called Dumbo & Cool. The game is a small, shareware game for PC - bla bla bla ... The project is nearing completion, and as such I am looking into public relations ideas, one of which is 'a celebrity endorsement'.

As Mrs. Holmes is one of the biggest and most respected names in Hollywood with recent films such as Batman Begins, I feel it would be an endorsement from Mrs. Holmes would be effective in raising the softwares profile. This endorsement would consist of a photograph of Mrs. Holmes holding a boxed copy of the game, to be used on the game's website. Whilst I will obviously provide the boxed copy of the game, I cannot provide money

Etc..."

No, my main objection is that it sounds so lame... but it'd be great if it happened... but it won't.

Definately not.

Should I?

why not look at the potential results:

worst- You get a mail back from the guy, saying she hated the idea etc.. You realise you dont really care, you dont know the girl anyway.

probably- No reply from the guy..

Best- She's very friendly, and likes games. She says yes, likes your game, and you get married next saturday..

Rewrite it! It sounds lame the way it is, forget about all that bowing and scraping and Mrs. Holmes stuff, just state the facts

Quote: "
Dear Madam or Sir:

My Name is Drew Cameron, and I'm nearing completion on a game that I've been programming for (blah blah) called Dumbo and Cool.

I've been thinking about how to promote my game when it's released. While I was watching Batman Begins for the fourth time with my g/f, I suddenly got the idea of having Mrs. Holmes endorse it. This endorsement would simply consist of having her holding a boxed copy of the game and no more than two or three quote from her about the game.

I understand that Mrs. Holmes is very busy with all sorts of film star stuff, but I would deeply appreciate it if you would mention this to her. [there's an extra $100 in it if you do it quick] I've created this special version of my game that accurately depicts where I am currently with my game. You can check it out here - [insert link]

I appreciate your time, and give Mrs.Holmes my best

Respectfuly,
Drew
"

Notice useage of "her" as opposed to repeating yourself all the time, and also notice the humanizing touches--watching batman begins, having a g/f, etc. Be sure to toss in a link to a piccy of yourself (the pirate one springs to mind)

Hawkeye, it's a nicer draft for sure, possibly a bit too friendly, and I disagree with the g/f bit because firstly I'm a swinging (and highly desirable) single, and secondly it's irrelevant and unprofessional.

If I went ahead, I wouldn't want to sound over-confident and definately not pushy ("the $100 if you do it quick" is a bit cheeky) but I like the easier tone you've applied in most areas but I've decided I won't do it, simply because I should be developing with little more than 4 weeks to go instead of concentrating on Katie Holmes related PR humour.

I simply put foward the scenario above, as a heresay.
