I'm back to work on Dumbo and Cool! My computer excuse was in fact true, but after some inspection it turned out to simply be a faulty connection to the C drive I'd also like to apologise to Megaton before continuing.

NOTE: This demo is over 2 months old, and lots and lots of stuff has happened since. Please do not bother posting bugs from this demo anymore, *or* - emailing them to me - as every reported bug has been fixed already.

Dumbo and Cool, ALPHA 1V8 =======================================

Download locations =======================================

Gameplay movie =======================================
http://www.drewsgames.com/trailer.wmv - WMV, 1.2mb

Synopsis =======================================
Dumbo and Cool is a 3D platforming game with two characters. Dumbo can swim, Cool can skate. They must be used together to overcome the game's teamwork orientated puzzles. The objective is to get all coins and cages in the level. The game can be played by a single person - who can switch between the two characters - or by two players, each controlling a character in the split screen mode. This demo features 2 levels from the full game.

Dumbo's swimming ability can be toggled using RETURN ( or CTRL ), Cool's swimming ability can be toggled using RETURN ( or CTRL ) - use the players abilities to get through each level. Make them work together!

Single player
ARROW KEYS: Move character
SPACE: Jump
CTRL: Switch character
RETURN: Toggle ability
MOUSE CLICK & MOVE: First person view

Two player
ARROW KEYS: Move Cool
WASD: Move Dumbo
SPACE: Jump as Cool
SHIFT: Jump as Dumbo
CTRL LEFT: Toggle Dumbo ability
CTRL RIGHT: Toggle Cool ability[/center]

Tips! =======================================

You can bounce on each other's heads.
Cool can "stun" enemies by skating into them quickly.
Enemies don't attack you... if they don't see you.
You cannot kill enemies, do not try.
Use first person view to look around for the last few coins... you can spot them for afar as they sparkle every now and again.

Known issues =======================================
MP3's, used for voices and music, cause the program to pause upon play.
No "win" screen - the game simply jumps to the next level.
There are no level boundaries, Dumbo can swim where he likes, which will not be the case in the future versions.
Slowdown - the game has not been optimized yet but will be soon.
Game crashes upon load of "level 3", which does not actually exist.
Not all voice samples are placed yet!

whooo! *impatiently waits for upload*
*edit* great timing, the moment I click post they're up

*editedit* Awesome... though i'm stuck in level 1... is the level win condition to get all the coins? I can't reach high up ones near the enemies hee.. nevermind, you've added tips which make it clear what i'm meant to do :p

*editeditedit* Just completed level 2, very awesome. Just got a little slowdown when I was near the waterfall in level1, no other problems at all

Characters genders are the opposite of what I thought they were, but tis awesome you included voices and greetings, awesome touch

Fixed.

Thanks - you need to work together! Use Cool and jump across with your roller skates, then stand on the button to open the path for Dumbo. Optionally, swim across as Dumbo and do the same. If you're really stuck, you can skip levels at the moment by pressing R.

Coming April 1st - a treat in the WIP board

Wow that was truely something. It seemed to run a little sluggish on my computer but other than that its great! The voices are good, the levels are good, the enemies are good, and everything else is good. I'm wondering something though, are you using matrices?

Great work, seriously !
A few possible critics
*dumbo and cool can walk through each other
*dumbos swimming animations is pretty much the walk animation, it just doesnt quite seem fluid enough.

But lovely work otherwise, i love the little details like the coin sparkles.
Keep it up man !

Yes, I am. As for slowdown, the next version will have many graphical options to tone down on particles, grass, tulips and other stuff like that. The game has a lot of models in it

Thanks Baggers - I did have collision on Dumbo and Cool for a while, but it caused problems in some of the other levels where they both have to be on a narrow platform. Also, annoying players in split screen could stay still and stop you getting anywhere!

Dumbo's animation? I'll give it a look, maybe if she was more horizontal than standing up in water?

Thanks for the other feedback.

Well, I just played it again and noticed two things.

1) I accidently hit the windows key and got to the desktop, then couldn't do anything because the mouse was stuck in a fixed position(fixed by the game)

2) When I went back into the game it crashed, and wrote this in the CrashOn file:

Very cool game !

The Specialeffects like the water (only for a short moment) and the fx on the lift ..... wonderful !

But the music semms to be a little buggy .... it gets louder only when im coming near a special point on Map 1 .... so i turned the speakers off.

And why is the camera range so small ? Are there any performance problems ?

But so far, very nice game

A much better graphical improvement over the old MS Paint invaded version.

This is a pretty unique DBP game. To begin with the particle effects are awsome. Everything from the transformation spark to the rain droplets and enemy blasters is really eye catching.

I love how you have to play as one character and then switch to the other to accomplish a certain goal together. I'm sure you can cook up many crazy scenarios/puzzles that require actual thinking using this method of gameplay.

The jumping is fun. Although I sometimes can't jump when holding up+left arrow keys at once, and I ran into a few problems where he won't turn direction in mid-air...

The split-screen is a nice touch, especially being able to bounce on your partner's head.

This isn't really an issue with the game, but the camera jerking back and forth made my eyes hurt. (Meh. It's just me)

Anyway, I'll try to beat the rest of the levels.

I'm glad you didn't lose the game in that "HDD" crash.
All the voice acting would have gone to shame.

Good luck!

@ Bestotr

Thanks! I know the music is buggy, has now been added to "known problems" bit of my thread ^^^ up It's nice you noticed the dripping upon exit of water The draw distance? I thought it was quite big ... but if it's any bigger then the backdrop image starts to look even more horribly stretched. Performance is sometimes an issue, the game is very object heavy after all

@ Math 89

Thanks!

@ Megaton

Thanks for the nice stuff said Megaton! I hope some of the puzzles will be good... did you get any further? Particles took a lot of time, so it's nice to see somebody notices. EDIT!

The camera will have a value in the options screen to change how it swoops around.

Hmmm ok maybe I should have rephrased myself...
What I meant was it's rare to see split in DBP games. Although it's not really a big need for me (not to mention I got no one to play with) I thought it was a sweet extra. Sorry for not giving you enough credit. I relize it took alot of work

Great game!

Game went completely mad halfway through level 2 and completely crashed my pc. I might have another go later and see if same thing happens.

Love the sparkly effects (even if you can see them through mountains!). Runs really smooth on my pc with no jerkiness whatsoever.

Well I got a little ways in level 1 before I had to quit, but looking veryvery nice! I'd suggest adding some camera fog to prevent the camera range from clipping scenery. The split screen thingee is pretty cool, it's rare that you see that in dbp games. Pretty sweet

That's awesome Drew - smooth as silk on my PC, and the gameplay is great, I really like the bit with the switch and the little bridge, I did'nt need it but it's a great touch, you got plans for more puzzle elements like that?.

One thing, I think the male voice is a little too old sounding - perhaps try adding a little helium by changing the replay speed a little, Dumbo's voice sounds fine though.

I got past level 1, but it crashed while loading level 2, here's the message it kicked up:

Object does not exist at line 4173.

Looking forward to the next instalment.

That worked, if it means anything it did take a few goes to finish level 1, maybe it's because I retried (like something being deleted then it's trying to delete it again when loading level 2).

Cool cablecar BTW .

@ spooky Where exactly were you in level 2 when it crashed. On top of the cable car, or on the black wire above?

@ Flindianananana Sorry to hear that, maybe try downloading again?

@ Hawkeye Thanks! Can't do the fog thing though... there is fog, but it has to be left as it is so that ghosted things fade away at the edges. If I changed it to sky colour, the water and clouds wouldn't work.

@ Van B Okay Van, thanks for the suggestions, I'll look up about adding some Helium - good thinking I'll have a look into the problem as well... Glad the cablecar went down well

You don't even need to use your partner to get past the switch & bridge part. Just swim across and hop back on shore. Not really a bug/glitch though...

The cablecar? Yes. You can also walk on top of the wire above the cablecar. Try it!

I know you don't need to use your partner, I thought I'd keep it loose for the first level.

I've been walking up the wire all the time. Didn't realise you could climb on the cablecar though . If you don't mind me asking, what did you use for collision? Did you use a TCP or your own method?

Wow! Dumbo&Cool is, well, Cool!
The second level is the better one to me, with good gameplay ideas.
Excellent technical effects, specially on D&C's special abilities

Only one idea: in my opinion you could add an "overall" view, a global (from far above) 3d view of the whole level pressing a defined key. It will be more useful than the first person view to have an idea of what to do.

Again, great work!

Heh it seems fairly bug free to me. The only bugs I've gotten are when I completed level 2(I'm guessing it assumed there was another level and tried to load it afterwards), or when I minimised the game and went back to it and it crashed. Did you hard code the levels or did you make any sort of level editor? Because you know, I want more levels.

The level 2 bug was known, it's in the known problems part of my thread. The minimize thing is known, but I don't know why it does that.

Levels are created using editors of course! I have a lot of cool tools that make level making easy: I make the levels using the following tools I made specially:

Matrix editor
Scenery editor
Coin editor
Enemy editor
Cage editor
Platform editor
Film editor
Grass editor (the lips around the matrix edges were done manually)
Level boundary editor
Collision map editor

So, yeah, more levels are coming, they just need a lot of work.
I'm hopefully going to sell the game with about 12+ levels - some other ideas for levels include a raining battlefield style level, a train top ride (like in Dumbo's Adventure), a factory, outer space and a volcano.

No worries! I think my tone came off wrong there...

When I do make more levels, people won't get to play them unless they buy the full game, , which will be done by August. I'm certainly moving fowards fast enough right now to make that a reality.

I can't afford to keep running my *free* games website, my films website and pay for life in general on my current job. I've also put a lot of money into this project myself. Selling Dumbo and Cool would solve a lot of my problems and leave me open to do some free projects next...

Anyway..

Briliant stuff: I love the large quantity of (visible) effort that has gone into this game. Nice visuals and voic-overs too. I'm not a fan of platform-like game, but this is one I enjoyed alot.

One little-tiny improvement that would make the experience (kind of) better [think its just me being picky]: Give your EXE a cool custom icon and version info, and you'll make me 100% happy.

Cool stuff.

Thanks Lightning Studios! I will of course be doing that

@ Tifu: I think £9.99 on my own website. If I can sell just 50 copies at that, it would cover my expenses and then some. Do you think I could sell the game? I'm divided, as I don't know if it's quite deep enough to sell... Obviously it'll have more levels and everything. It's probably worth a try anyway.

Anyways, thanks for your interest so far everyone! As always: I'm still looking for...

If the character models were spiced up abit (Some kinda bubble shader would own) and add more detail into the texture, you could sell it if you wanted. (Levels look good, but texture looks too flat and generic. I think you can achieve better results while still upholding the cartoonish look)

Wish you..ahem....financial/general luck.

It's up to you whether or not you want to sell it Drew, not anyone else. I think you should sell it though, you seem to have put lots of time and effort into this so far. It's also very polished(which is essential).

Go for it Drew! Can't recall any DBP adventure games that've been published anyway.(I consider The Magic World and RPG )

A book? I hate book. Book is stupid.
