Great work, but I do see a bit of texture problem (or so it seems from this angle) with the front left claw. It has hude distortion!

thanks

whacked the low poly back into ZB today and have started to rework the high poly again, but here is the progress:

going for something like the oblivion zombie, may even chop an arm off for extra grotesque zombie goodness. (notice the missing fingers)

currently missing some eyes, but then again he's also missing pretty much his entire crotch. I'll be adding some more asymmetrical details to the face, like some rotting skin/the whole terminator 'halves' thing.

this is going to be too easy to UV map and texture, domwar starts in two days, might be able to get it done by then hopefully.

sweet! i look forward to seeing what you'll come up with! I got no where near a top place last time, but im still thrilled with what i got. I think it was two judges favourites and one vote for second place. But the suspense of the competition really drives you to create something so damn awesome that you get alot of fun out of it either way.

oh and by the way, what wood elf?!?

Quote: "Jon, can you list what techniques you used to texture Warg?"

well, there were alot of times that i was using either smudge of liquify for the fur, but in general there was nothing special, just a fur/grime overlay over things and individual layers for everything else (dodge/burn/colour/scratches etc.)

i will however now write a short tutorial on an awesome technique i picked up somewhere i cant remember (might be polycount) to do with applying a layer over things of only certain lightness/darkness, which is good for advanced 'paint' or desaturating overly lit areas.

so expect that here shortly.

Quote: "Amazing!!! you will have my cash. Will the weapons have hands?"

thanks. yep they will have hands, Mark sent me a couple ref images of the model pack 18 hands and i will be going for the same style to make sure they can all work together right.

ranged weapons (most notably the bow, crossbow and slingshot) will have scopes, but these wont be identified as actual scopes, but rather, an eagle eye effect, just zooming in normally (like an iron-sight) with a faked DOF.

Awsome stuff Jon, that zombie looks weirdly gross (in a cool sort of way). I love Oblivion, my favourite game (very addictive), I'm level 23. Good work on the zombie and looking forward to more progress.

thanks man.

haven't textured much, and some bits will only look right when a specular map is created but here it is so far:

it will have a little hair and ragged cloth in places. for the hair, think of the thin greasy strands which gollum/smeagol from LOTR has, that kind of dead look.

Jon , I just love your tutorials they are short and powerful..
To bad of the youtube videos , they having a bad quality that make it hard to watch.
IF you want I could upload the high resolution videos on my rapidshare account(i'm paying for it ) you will be able to download they very fast.

The wood elf.....erm. ..he is is the dark green forest..with his friends..

And about the Doooomwar may the best win

EDIT : wow ! the wood elf.. I mean the Zombie looks amazing ! His face remind me of labourer.

LIES! you cant escape the truth with the edit button!

to be honest, even the higher resolution videos still looked like turd, though the raw data was absolutely huge, but then i deleted this afterwards (was that big)

the problem was that i was recording at the native screen resolution, 1920x1200. i have tried making a texturing video before at something like 800x600 or around that and i shortly become quite agitated with the lack of space.

I'll do the next one i make on my main PC monitor, which is a much smaller resolution, without the annoying 'cropping'

thanks for the offer though, i appreciate it. though i could always use my web-space.

edit:

damnit! i literally just finished that tutorial, went to add a bit of text to the end, photoshop froze, had to end the process and open up again to find the last save i made was bloody half way through the tut, and now i don't have the PSD/layers for the example i was using, meaning i have to do the whole thing over again! GAAAH, RANT!

there are times where i bloody hate computers, too many of these 'ironic' occasions keep happening

Haha. Just a quick kind of doodle, Jon?

Looks good, except the neck is kind of drawn back...I guess you'll design a complementing body for it?

nope, just a doodle

helps just to have a bit of ZB fun as often as possible

im getting into playing with SDK's and stuff now, downloaded quite a few from Polycount, which look like a blast to texture.

Oooh..oooh...me..me! Is it the "blend if" function in the layer styles window? That little thing can be magical. Do I get ten points?

I feel your pain with computer problems. For some reason now in Vista, Photoshop will randomly close on me, no warning whatsoever. I've learned to save now like every 20 seconds.

..damn you, i thought i could keep it to myself. but ya thats the one, nifty little tool, does the annoying job quick and accurately.

I wish they would integrate a system like in max, where it saves a backup occasionally, or atleast something like an attempted save on crash. sucks. balls.

then again CS3 might have that, not sure...at least apparently they fixed the random screen problems in Vista. Very weird how that managed to get past the microsoft vista compatibility lab

maybe..i should buy a Mac?

No. Thats retarded thinking.

@ Alucard94

CEASE YOUR GIBBERISH FOOL! j/k

personal really, i don't know why, but i would rather buy a PC that crashes on me over a Mac that is marketed by a bunch of douche bags who think aesthetics is THE answer.

for instance, i recently saw the new mac-book air TV commercial, they pull it out of a bag and say its thin.... wow, everything you need in a computer.

im sure there are perfectly good arguments and areas where it is alot better, but not for me, this may give me a fan-boy look but by god i shall never fall for the devil that is the Mac.

If they made a computer with a not so 'in your face' marketing strategy i may slightly consider it.

nothing against you of course, just an Apple grudge.

and i checked, max is only for Windows.

Quote: "This be the second time I've seen someone misspell kthxbai! It saddens me...lol"

lol! Everywhere i have seen spells it like i did, plus i think its easier to type and recognise.

edit:

thanks fluffy, probably £11.99/$19.99 each, if they go with tgc.

@Jon Fletcher- I was taking a look at some of your older threads like the dragon model thread, man you are a very talented artist. Cool , got a link ?

The zombie looks very good , you really should create some different versions of it ! Like headless , armless , footless ..green colored , etc.
btw is that his heart on his breast ? very original.

Why ??
I guess we have to wait a other day for domwar.. still 22 to go

one for a whole thread full of heads:

http://boards.polycount.net/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=13950&an=0&page=0#Post13950

which are probably the most fun/less frustrating/less time consuming practices. Then there is another SDK thread in the archives forum i think.

Quote: "The zombie looks very good , you really should create some different versions of it ! Like headless , armless , footless ..green colored , etc"

ya thats what the texture variations will be used for including the decapitation of arms and stuff.

Quote: "btw is that his heart on his breast ? very original.

nah, could be if i flipped the model (heart is slightly to the left of the body) but it was more of an infected tumor type thing on the lung bursting out of the body (like the center of the infection/weak spot/something to aim at )

lol i was wondering what you were talking about in that last bit, visited the website and yeah, knocked up to 22 hours

I'm calling the zombie finished, updated first post.

here as well.

yeah i didn't go into any of the decomposed clothing i would've liked to have had hanging off the body, but lets be honest, it would've been a waste of time. still looks nice in this state.

next (in between dominance war if possible) is the orcish hatchet/axe, been a while since a weapon was completed.

edit:

also, just for a fun little piece of information, that font i always use for my website and model captions etc (the scratchy one) didnt have anything for 'Z', so i had to draw my own

I hope this pack has a bow crossbow and a weapon arm (spell casting arm would be nice as well), model pack 17 does not have a melee weapon, bit of a daft oversight, so Im passing on that one, hopefully this one will fill the gap instead.

change ...? got any change ? nice pose man of the last screen

Quote: "he's come back from the dead to give you lots of squidgy hugs"

At least you can ask him where he has Hide the gold , then you can put him back under the bed.

Quote: "nah, could be if i flipped the model (heart is slightly to the left of the body) but it was more of an infected tumor type thing on the lung bursting out of the body (like the center of the infection/weak spot/something to aim at."

ahh , I thought you flipped the pic
But you know , you could let some parts of that tumor glow maybe a orange color. It may look like the zombie is cursed or poised inside and that makes him a life !

Just my suggestion.

Oh yes thanks for the link , I could download some really nice heads , few of the links are broken .

I think the zombie would benefit from having actual geometry for the toes... the normal/specular mapping help but I dont think it quite pulls it off....

Also you use zBrush, right? Why not Mudbox?

Looking forward to more work

If you are looking for ideas, please do a reptilian, they are all over mythology, Aztecs - Quetzalcoatl, Indians - Nagas, Africa - Chitauli, Chinese - Dragon Kings, etc, etc, well everyone really, talks of them, remember that creepy scene in Conan when James Earl Jones turns into one, that was so cool. so it would be cool to have one, they can be used in a lot of games as well, fantasy like Conan type thing, or historical fantasy like the scorpion king, or Call of Cthulhu 1920s, or modern day horror, or even as aliens, just loads of things to use them with.

A ghost or phantom would be nice, quick to do as they are just robbed figured, perhaps whith a Edward Munch the scream face, or just a hollow robe figure, character would touch you or grab you take a massive load of hit points doing so and then dissapear.

How come in the poly count it looks al plan but when rounded out it looks like SOOOO MUCH MORE DETAIL HAS GOT IN!

How did you do that?

ALso what programs do you use and how many polies are in those models? Thanks! [Character models]

it's called a normal map

Jon uses Z-brush for his high poly stuff, 3DS Max for the base mesh, and PS for texturing. He mays use some other programs, but im pretty sure those are the 3 main ones he uses

Kamil: Essentially, you model a low poly version of your character first, IV map it and save it. Then you take the same model, and add a tonne of detail to it, amping up the polycount insanely. Zbrush and Mudbox are programs that allow you to "sculpt" detail into the mesh, giving you a tonne of control over how good it looks.

When you have your high poly detailed mesh done, you export a normal map from this mesh. You take this normal map, and texture your low polygon model with it. It basically takes all of the lighting information from the high poly model and throws it into the low poly, so the detail is still there without the polycount.

Theres other ways of making the normal maps, a new method is making the high poly model first.
