Ok, I've replaced the lower part of the boss's body with dark smoke!

What do you think?

WOW .

I can't wait to see THAT in action

Did you make the laser texture yourself?

I love it when people really show how much you can push the boundaries of Dark Basic. I love seeing these games that have been envisioned and eventually come to life by the skill of the creator.

I give you a lot of credit. Taking on a project like this and following through with it for so long takes some serious heart.

Keep up the good work! You rock!

~Techninja

EDIT 1: By the way, I like the new smoke effect on the boss MUCH better. It makes it more dark and sinister looking. The exposed bottom sort of lost that effect.

EDIT 2: I'm getting an "Error 31" message when I try to play the game. I'm using Windows XP. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Feel like I understand text-based/2D programs well enough.

Time to move to 3D!

@all:
Thank you for you comments!

@TheComet:
Yup, home-made texture.

@Dragon Knight:
Thanks, but I have all the monsters I need for the moment.

@Techninja:
Thank you for your kind comment!
Do you get the error immediately after you click the exe? Remember, the game won't run if you alter the name on any file or folder. Maybe you could try to set the exe to compability mode.

zzz:

I was able to get your game running in compatibility mode. Thanks for the tip. However, when I try to run a saved game, I get "Runtime Error: 99". I'll keep messing with the settings.

Here's what I think:

Pros:
- The controls and view angles are very precise and don't seem to snag on any corners.
- The theme is consistent. All creatures, models, textures, etc. have the same feel to them (reminds me very much of the latest Zelda game).
- All actions are smoothly executed.
- Models are awesome! I love how you managed to do this with the little wiggle room you were provided!
- Sounds and music are appropriate.

Cons:
- The sword swinging effect is kinda awkward.
- The face of the one guy you meet in the beginning seems off-center.
- The loading takes a little while (may just be me) and it would be nice if you added a % bar.

Overall:
- Loved it! It's great and I'll work around that loading issue. Keep up the good work! I'm not sure how much my opinion counts because my 3D abilities are certainly sub-par.

Thanks so much!

@Techninja:
More pros than cons? Then I must be doing something right!
Quote: "The sword swinging effect is kinda awkward"

The sword trail?
Quote: "The face of the one guy you meet in the beginning seems off-center."

Do you mean Mr. Trevus, who lives in the house on lv 2?
Quote: "The loading takes a little while (may just be me) and it would be nice if you added a % bar."

Yeah, the loading itself may be hard to do something about. But I'm planning on adding a loading bar.

Quote: "Loved it! It's great and I'll work around that loading issue."

Thanks! As soon as the game is more or less done(I'm working on the last boss battle, as you can see), I'll focus on fixing the remaining bugs.

Quote: "Keep up the good work! I'm not sure how much my opinion counts because my 3D abilities are certainly sub-par."

Your opinion counts as much as anyone else's! Thanks for playing my game!

Here you go; more screenshots!

Oohohohoh... Looking very nice there! How difficult would you say this boss is judging from the rest of the game?

You know, I'm wondering if I should retexture my character as well. It did so much for Soul Hunter...

Also, I notice it's night now. What happened?

The beginning of the level will take place during dawn. But it will get darker as soon as the battle starts, so I temporarily changed the level to night, just to get a feeling what it will look like. As the battle continues it will get darker and darker...

Anyway, I've now uploaded a newer video of the boss-battle:
Vimeo
YouTube

Don't mind the other enemies running around on the level, they're just present to make debugging a little funnier.
And yeah; awful, laggy, fraps-framerate as usual...

I don't have enough words to describe how awesome that just was... Every time I look at your new updates, I think "OMG, that was soooo incredible, I think I will never get anywhere with TombStone...".

I see you added "dust" flying around where SoulHunter walks . If you contrast it a bit more so it appears nearer to him, it would look perfect.

The laser is a bit black. Is that usual?

The smoke looks really good, as does the animation and pretty much everything else. Great job on everything, my jaw dropped so far when I saw that, that I have to go to a doctor.

Cheers!

Yes, very nice. This did point out something to me which you might want to improve though. I noticed in this vid that Soul Hunter is very rigid when he moves. Maybe you should add a very slight acceleration and deceleration to his movement? I would say it should be so slight it's cosmetic, but enough that he's not so stiff when moving.

Uh, ehm?
Yes, it is very usual.

Quote: "Maybe you should add a very slight acceleration and deceleration to his movement?"

He does have a slight acceleration/deceleration already. I'll just have to tweak the variables a little.

I marked it red in this pic:

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh100/TheComet92/dboss4.jpg

It looks like an inverted sphere or something where the dirt is flying, and there are traces of more black stuff along the beam. That's what I meant.

Hmm, I just don't think it fits that well. If you made it look a bit more like smoke, it would look better, but I just see it as some graphical error right now. But if you think it's cool, then that's that. It IS your game, right?

Sure, pic is in a link now.

Really really really impresive.
This is really DBC??? (it jus a sarcasm)

The walk animation is very nice now and the speed to it's very well done!!! (After a great effort). The game has very nice speed to, the character is looking far more better, when it falls it looks real and has a nice visual appealing. The cloth looking it's superb, it just move nicely with every animation.

The boss gives you the impression you just have to run to stay alive!!

I completely agree with the commet, that should look more like smoke.
It just dont fit with the other things in the video..

I think it fits fine in the video, though I do think it a bit odd in the screenshots. I would keep it the way it is. Any sort of smoke effect that was equivalent would have a huge hit on the fps.

Also, it's an inverted model, which I'm partial to.

Yet another great game made in DBC. It's amazing what one can do once he puts his mind to it. Oh yeah, and inverted models rock.

I applaud your amazing efforts--over three years of hard work! To make something with quality as high as this deserves more than just a thread in a forum.

I hope to see more updates as time goes by, and hopefully a finished commercial product.

Wow... I am speechless someone could do this is DBC. The game looks absolutely stunning. The story is so original. Great Job!

Actually, I browse around the boards just to critique stories to make them more original, it seems that many are doing the "Shoot everyone in your sight"

Obviously, then, you're not aware of the capabilities of DBC. The three greatest TGC projects are made in DBC as far as I'm concerned: Soulhunter, Dream and Evochron Legends.

I'm probably going to try OpenGL some time in the future. DX seemed easier to me when I started, and I got the feeling that it had more newbie tutorials.

Anyway, I've been working quite a lot on soulhunter the last couple of days. The first phase of the boss battle is now finished. I'm currently working on its ending cinematics.
When that's done, I'll begin working on phase two (with the large dragon/crocodile monster visible in my sig).
