Quote: "When I brought up the "donation system" thingy, I didn't mention it as a mean for zzz to get rich, just a way for us to show our gratitude for what he has done."

If it's just about gratitude there are lots of ways to show that without including money...

I doubt many people will ever get rich from making DBP games, I think Ermes was just suggesting that he might actually make some money by going the donation route. I agree.

People donate for a variety of reasons but the main reason is almost always gratitude (...then guilt)

so, money it the only way to show gratitude to someone.
oh, that's beautiful. really.

try this, when you make sex with your wife/girlfriend, just give it some money, she will be very happy for your gratitude!!!

i'm very grateful with zzz for let us download and play his game, but i guess zzz has his own money entry with his work, he doesn't really need our money, but i can suppose he can be more happy with our admiration.

maybe our grateful can be showed in other ways, there isn't only money.

i know i've a strange way to see those things, and maybe i'm the only one to think like that.

ah aha ha! well, i'm glad someone here has humor!

but the point is: I CAN'T WAIT! WHERE IS THE COMPLETE VERSION OF SOUL HUNTER?

i'm going to rent a hot-air ballon and travel at zzz's home, then at dusk i will enter in his pc-room, and i'll steal the HD of his PC. so, back to my home, finally i can play the latest version of soul hunter!

I think, Zzz can sell it for a low price. Ensuring that many people can play it and amking a bit of money.

The only problem is with payment methods.

Cheers.

Is this capable of running on a netbook? There's an idea, and I know I've seen somewhere that TGC would help any developer get their game on AppUp and I think even pay the $100 fee. There could be one way to get your game out.

@Ermes >> I don't think it's wise to work for free. That's the best way to lower the perceived value of our work and that's a main reason why we see games priced at 1$. Programming and creating the media for a game is complex and takes time.

What is free has no value in people eyes.
Moreover, Soulhunter has a higher quality than most independant commercial games. (if you correct most bugs)

@zzz>> I think you should test your game on as many pcs as you can and then when it is stable, release a free demo.

At the end of the demo, the player is redirected to your website when he can purchase the full game at the price he wants to.

In this way, the demo will spread all over internet as Ermes suggested, and also the players will know if they can run the game on their computer.

Then if the player appreciates the demo, he can reward you work from 1$ to X$.

I can help you test SoulHunter on a netbook "eeepc900" 1ghz, 1goDDram, 64moVram.

I think that zzz can charge at a low price and maybe it can become difficult to foresee how things are going to be or not. Either one can be a success if taken up correctly. Just let zzz chose.

@Alfa x: Wise idea! It's his game, it's not our business to decide for him if he'd sell the game or give it away for free. He did a great work and it's his call. At best we can download it, buy it and give him feedback, if we truly want to help.

I would put down $30 in donations for this game. This game being finished means almost as much to me as finishing Dream does, whenever I do that (it's going, but no time to keep up a wip right now).

Donations are the way to go, while getting the game spread everywhere. It's unlikely the game would make you much money for it, but people will know you made it, and a link to your website in the game will point people in the right direction. If you ever want to start selling indi games, having something pretty amazing for free is a good indicator to people how good you are.

And if you don't particularly plan to make money off of selling indi games? Well you've made a great game, and thousands of people will get to enjoy it at least, because it is free.

Yeah, I guess I could hide a donate button somewhere.

Anyway, I've begun redoing some of the assets of level 2. Working on the ghost(anyone remember?) right now.
I'm also currently working with all things real time rendereing in school right now, so I managed to make something cool in DirectX 10!
I have a lot of ideas for future projects right now, so I better find some spare time quick, so I can finish Soulhunter!
A little offtopic, but I recently created a profile at indiedb.com, check it out(and maybe add me as friend, we TGC:ers gotta stick together, right?)

I'm glad you're still working on this game zzz. I'll admit I've been looking forward to playing the full version since you originally released the demo!

I'd be happy to help alpha/beta test it for you also. My laptop isn't the best but it's good enough for DBC games!

Actually, the first version just had an ellipsis between "faith" and "disturbing", but I decided that wasn't entirely accurate.

Only some debugging left, so I thought I could give you at least one screenshot:

Beginning of level 2. I've made small changes to each level, but almost half of level 2 has been remodeled.
The overall level layouts has not been changed though, ie. start and goal are roughly in the same places.

I'm really busy this upcoming week, but I'm only a few bugs away from releasing the alpha. I'm aiming at releasing it before february.
Meanwhile, I've taken some new screenshots of some old locations. You can view them here. Not much, I know.

@ermes

definetly possible for newcomers, if they invest enough
time and stay focused on one project.
Soulhunter is a great example of focusing it was in the works
as thegamecreators where only about dbc. So it took more than 5 years
(please correcte if im wrong there zzz)
So its a perfect example that you can archieve everything if you have
got enough time

@ zzz

I have a suggestion : When you swing the sword, the trail in the air is always 1 frame behind where the actual sword position is. I think it would look much better if you connected the sword trail to the sword. I don't know if you did it on purpose or not though

Yeah, almost done now...
I'm currently ironing out bugs to make sure that the player can complete the game from start to finish. I'm hoping to release the alpha at the end of this month or in early february.

I'm not able to spend as much time on this game as I used to be, so I want you to understand that I cannot add any more features to the game, or make any major optimizations. I simply don't have the time nor the desire to do so. But I will try to fix major, game-breaking bugs that you may encounter in the alpha. I hope you understand. ^^

Stay tuned, and here's another screenshot while you're waiting:

Hey,
awesome project zzz!
I'll be sure to check out the alpha as soon as it's released.
I like the dinosaur enemy in your last screenshot!

On a side note, I'd like to ask you how your Bytegrove homepage has been made. Or didn't you write it?
The reason is that I want have some type of showcase-page like that for my own work (like the image viewer and such). I have basic knowledge in HTML, but I guess yours is written in something else, right?

Now the plot thickens, the fps decreases, and the awesomeness goes through the roof.

@Ermes:
I have a very crude but functional cheat system. There's currently only one cheat, one that opens up all the levels and items and gives you infinite health. But I'll add some other cheats as well, that maybe only makes you invincible or only opens the levels.

@_Pauli_:
Glad you like it!
I made my website using Wordpress and I made the template using PHP and a template framework called Thematic. Wordpress was really easy to learn and has a ton of customisable plugins, I really enjoyed working with it. PHP is also dead easy, I recommend w3schools for syntax lookups.

zzz, I've been playing the demo you posted a page or two back, and all I have to say about this game is .........

WOW!!!!!!

It is AMAZING. It's like exactly my forte for games. There's some elements that remind me of Zelda and I absolutely love the level design (did you hard-code all of the levels or did you create a level editor of some kind?). I would totally buy this game!

Potential spoiler, but also a bug report (maybe):

@ zzz

Wow, you brightened the game up quite a bit! I do hope this isn't the case everywhere in the game though, it would be sad to get rid of that awesome soulhunter-dark-eerie-feeling

Oooh, the start-to-end testing phase... I find that the most annoying phase when making a game, because you have to play it so many times

Anyway, great work, keep it up, can't wait for final release!

Teaser Trailer

Music: "In the Hall of the Mountain King" By Edvard Grieg
(Turn the volume up)

This version is sadly blocked in Germany(copyright reasons).
So I made you this version with public domain music created by Kevin McLeod (incompetech.com):
>>German version<<
Both these songs made by him are in the game.
