You know what, maybe the hips just aren't wide enough. If they were just a tad wider, maybe it would bring everything else into proportion.

edited above post with reference link. look at the part around where the arm connects to the shoulder.

put link in this code snippet.

heres a paintover of what I mean. Just a few tweaks to define figure shape more "curvy" as females are. the problem seemed to be partly that the ribcage ended lower than it should have realtive to the bust and shoulders.

also in this example, look at the bottom right. the shoulders break almost flush with the widest part of the ribs when out at an angle of about 30 degrees like the model shot.

Very interesting site. I'll be sure and reference that in the future. Thanks!

You know what, I think you're right. If the shoulders were brought in just a bit, it would improve the model. I definitely don't want a porn star look, but a bit more curvy would definitely be good.

ha glad I could help.

Its a very common mistake people make in the drawing world, which is why i recognised the "symptoms". Sometimes people are afraid to study the anatomy of the opposite sex just because people might think they were perverts or something, unfortunately it comes back to bite you in the arse.

My ex-GF was chinese and racked like an Texan gun store, so that's not always the case! But I take your points on shoulders. I'm not sure quite how much it matters with the perspective the game will usually be played from. If you can zoom in pretty close than I suppose yeah you want it as perfect as possible. Maybe shoulders are even more important from above?

Nice painting btw Oddy. Cash couldn't go far wrong using that as a backdrop for the Credits screen, or menu etc with some toning down of the contrast to help the text stand out.

Your work on this so far is incredible. This is really the most impressive thing I've ever seen made in DBP.

I never believed for one second that DBP could not make a decent RPG and you stand to very quickly prove me right.

@DB user 2006+
That's not exactly what I'm doing. Hiding a model is not really an effective way to cull it. Exclude Object On is the command that you want. That simply skips the rendering of the model. However, you can still position it, clone it, and test for it on screen. Check out this link...
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=84406&b=15
for a simplified version of my code. I'm simultaneously culling the models and the animations of the models. After all, there's not really any reason to be animating models off screen, which is usually what happens in DBP games.

@Oddmind -
Quote: "art inspired by geisha house. Painted this just a minute ago."

Very nice drawing. A very.. haunted look to her. Very fitting. Like Fallout said, I could most certainly have that a part of the credits. The only input that I have for this is that perhaps her nose could be just a bit slimmer. Not much, just a touch. Good work! And don't worry about hijacking this thread, it's all Geisha House related anyway.

@Fallout -

Sounds like fun Hope you kept the pictures

@Dr Manette -
Thanks! This is most definitely going all the way. I'm too far in to give it up now. Actually, I think it's more of a "I'm wholly consumed by this project" kind of thing. All of the major work is done now, just finishing up the details.

That model looks just perfect. Very professional, the perfect game character. UV map away, my friend! And don't worry about hijacking this thread, it's all for GH!

I've not been doing as much work, as this is supposed to be my week off. But... I've finished the bath house, and it's ready to be integrated into the game. It already has been, but I have to modify the engine to allow for below ground structures, which I haven't previously done. Not a big deal, just a modification of the bounding boxes used to cull the stories above the characters.

I'm also going to fully integrate a First Person game view. By that I mean that when the camera pops into position on the character's head, I'll stop culling the buildings and I'll allow the player to use WASD / Arrowkeys to control the characters. I don't really like this view as much, but some people do. With the 3D sounds already in place, everyone should be able to tell if something is sneaking up behind them. If not, they can just change views.

Here are a couple new pictures...

Next week I'll blow all of you away with a new video I have planned. Until then!

Woooo!! Drew is back!! Can't wait to see what you have in mind

3DWS really is a great program. It's not perfect. Like exporting transparencies to .dbo doesn't work properly. And gile[s] is a better lightmapper, but as an all in one low-polygon modeling / lightmapping program, it's fantastic and surprisingly well made. I've been churning out some pretty good looking stuff lately.

@Cash

I've decided the transparency problem is probably a blessing in disguise. If you want to break glass, or have it so that players can see through windows (ray cast a line through the window for AI for example), you couldnt do that if the transparency was part of the 3DWS mesh. They have to be separate objects to allow them to break as well as ignore them from ray casting routines. So as much as it is a bug, it's actually turned out to be very beneficial for me at least.

As for the latest screenie, it looks cool man. This is getting more interesting as time goes on. You seem to have quite an impressive range of monsters. Looking forward to that vid!

You know, you're right about the transparency thing. I didn't realize it, but if you apply transparency to a large building for just a couple windows and objects inside of it, you get a sizable drop in FPS. Viewing the bath house with transparency gave me 280 fps, without was 300 fps. So, I separated the transparent objects and now I mysteriously get 307ish.

It's still a hassle, though. I was able to render a separate lightmap for the separate objects that made it blend in with the original mesh.

Something that perhaps you can try with your separate objects - you can apply a manual lightmap in DBP with the command "SET LIGHT MAPPING ON". I did it in 5.8 when a lightmap changed the lighting on non-lightmapped objects. You could experiment with manually applying your own lightmap to a DBP primitive to get the look you want, rather than messing around with the lighting commands.

rawr either way I'd go in there. RL sometimes doesn't look as cool as Geisha House.

And I will! I'm going to have a quotes section that is viewable after the game has been won. Along with the time that Jeku called me '...some noob...' about a month or two ago. Ah, good times, good times.

If GH weren't more interesting than real life, then there would really be no point. So, I've got fantasy, swords, magic, and babes. What else is there?

The Bath House is more of a Gentleman's Club. It's where dem rich pimps hang out and party, in a place where laws don't really matter.

Most definitely. It always amuses me when people claim to be working on 10 different projects. You know they won't finish a single one.

Well, no videos tonight. And tomorrow I HAVE to do homework. But, I can't resist, so here's the Bath House in game. No bikini girls just yet, but everything is pretty much in place. I've got one slightly complicated problem to work out, but I'll meditate on it and it will be okay.

Please excuse the low FPS, I've got a lot of stuff running in the background...

@Alquerian -
3DWS makes me look like a 3D modeler or something I'm excited too about the video, I've got some cool stuff planned. Just... must resist... the urge to work on it...

Btw everyone, Alquerian's editor that he mentioned is looking VERY nice, and like it will be VERY useful, for pretty much any type of DBP project. I won't say any more, you guys will have to see for yourself.

@Fallout -
Your song is AMAZING. It is just right, in all regards. A little bit Asian, a little bit majestic, a little bit dark and foreboding. I'll definitely put a snippet of it in the video this coming week. And this song is going to carry the official trailer home, I can totally see the video in my head. I'm going to hire a voice over artist when the time comes. I've listened to it several times. I could even see this song in a movie, it's that damned good

Thank you, thank you This has been my dream game forever, and it's actually falling into place.

Quote: "My... 2nd post since I have returned! This is excellent. Hopefully you can sell the finished product."

Well actually, I'm not going to sell this one. This is more of a demo of my engine. Now, my demo has kind of taken on a life of its own. This is nothing compared to what I've got planned, though.

I look forward to the next MilkPaton! And I really look forward to seeing what you have in mind

I've tried to resist, but I've gotten too many good comments not to post, and I hate posting without pictures. So, here we go...

Some shots of the local pub, one of the last places I have to model.

A few new ones of the bath house...

A pool party gone terribly wrong. This is a good reason why you should always tip...

Please excuse all the low framerates, I've got a lot of stuff running in the background. And in my model viewer, I've got transparency applied incorrectly, for the sake of ease.
Well, I have a report due in a while. I'd better get to work!

Glad to see GH is still taking priority over college work! As for the tune, as you know already, no problemo! Was good experience for me and this game deserves a theme tune if any game does.

These screenies are kicking ass aswell. Out of curiousity, seeing as you have a roof on the pub, how do you see through the ceiling? Is it removable, or is it purely because you've removed the backfaces from the 3DWS primitives, and therefore can look right through from above?

The ceiling and roof are a complete and separate model. So far, each building is constructed from stories, up to 3 (including the roof). I create a bounding box for the first two stories. When you enter one, it hides everything above it.

Every building has a ceiling like that. If you look on the previous page, you'll notice a ceiling in the bath house. I'm careful to include them, because I'm going to include first person view support. In that view, I will not cull the floors above.

@Chenak -

Hey, I've got a request. I've got an animated model that I'd like to add a couple of animations to. Nothing crazy, but just something that's part of the story, and something that will make a good trailer for the game. I've got a CharacterFX and Milkshape version of the model, all rigged up and ready to go. I can't post the model here, so if you're interested, I could just e-mail it to you. Thanks! And I can't wait to see that healer girl!

@Steve J -
Well, I certainly do appreciate that. This game was meant to be a simple demonstration of the engine. It has kind of turned into a full fledged mini-RPG. But, I'm designing everything to be directly portable to the next RPG that I'll be making, and I'll definitely sell that one. I think it would be good to get a lot of people playing this game and build a solid support base. I think that will help future installments sell better.

Well, obviously not. I mean, look at his dumb avatar, and that signature picture that says 'Come look at my game just because I stole some picture of a hot Asian chick from a movie who doesn't even look like any Japanese girl I've ever seen". Wow, what a poser

Okay everyone, here's the final building of the game! I've still got some static structures and object to do, but just minor stuff, like a cart and some crates.

The local bar...

And Brandy, the bar maid.

I'll have one other girl in the place, but she'll be a little trampier. Either myself or Chenak can throw a skirt on one of those other girls and UV map some clothes.

Well, I'm out.

Looks very nice

I've been working on the texture and uvmapping, texturing takes the longest for me cause I want it as close to perfect as possible

Done the basic scetch for the texture, just need to apply it now

I've started that animation too. I seriously want to kick the whoever made cfx for leaving it so buggy. Its getting there though

Looking indredible! Looking great. She's an important character, so I'm very glad she's getting this much attention

How is that treating you? I was worried that it would be a crazy task. Sounds very cool, and will really add a lot to the game (and the game trailer).

I can't wait!

Look who's here...

He's drunk, and pissed off for being put into every single Dark Basic RPG in history. And now he's here to open a can of whup-ass on me...

His lighting isn't right, but I haven't made scripting provisions for that yet. I'll fix that up tomorrow. Until then!
